Are you for putting old folks out on an iceberg to die when they've outlived their usefulness too? You're gonna be old someday and I hope your children stick you in an old folks home and forget you ever existed.
BTW, How about certain FReepers like you, retiring? You outlived your usefulness on here a LONG time ago.

Look, nobody said to put him out on an ice floe. But OPH is right, the guy is dribbling in his oatmeal and should have retired years ago.
His service is noted, but all things come to an end. In his present condition, he isn't a credit to the party or himself.

Your example of Strom, Jr. being made U.S. Attorney for SC when he is "unqualified", proves my point about Strom, Sr.'s continuing influence. Nobody was about to say "No" to Strom. As I said, he still shows up for his votes, he votes the "right" way, and everybody should know that all the Congressional staffs do all the real work anyway. He's not doing anybody any harm. Besides, Strom, Jr. might end up doing a really good job.

As I said, he still shows up for his votes, he votes the "right" way, I WISH my two Senators from Ohio, both Republicans BTW, could just show up and vote the "right" way. (sigh)

Just to put it in perspective, he's old enough to be Jesse Helms' daddy.

Thanks, Annie! Here's an excerpt from your link there!:
He also got me my first job as an intern in his Senate office. I was 16. Strom was a spry 72. We have maintained a fond acquaintance since and every year at about this time, I drop by his office to check to see if he is still alive. If so, I offer a happy birthday greeting.
LOL!
To: MeeknMing
Gave him his first job as an intern....and Armstrong Williams is black. Strom has is truly an example of a changed man, though lib/dems keep trying to pin his past on him. He's not still stepping in and out of racism - as does former Wizard, Robert Byrd.
To: anniegetyourgun
Robert Byrd. Is this the same hateful, divisive Congressman I see WAY too often on the tube? I can't stand him!. . .
To: MeeknMing
Yes, the white-haired 84 year old senator of pork from W. Virginia. Great editorial today - don't know if it's elsewhere on FR as I haven't checked, but
check it out here.
To: MeeknMing
Thanks for the heads up! Happy Birthday, Strom Thurmond!

I hope I reach 99, too. Actually, it has been my lifelong wish to live to 100.
Good going, Strom! Happy birthday!
