ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Dec 05, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar has decided to launch a political party which will include dissidents of the Northern Alliance, a Pakistani newspaper reported Wednesday.

Quoting senior Taliban officials, the mass circulation Jang newspaper said Mullah Omar is consulting his ministers and senior commanders to convert his militant movement into a political party.

The report said that he also intends to invite some leaders of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, which snatched Kabul and other Afghan territories from him last, to join his party.

"The Taliban believe that there are some in the Northern Alliance who are unhappy with their leader, Burhanuddin Rabbani, and would like to join another group," he said.

Once the party is formed, the name of the Taliban movement will also be changed, a senior Taliban official told the newspaper.

"Initially, Mullah Omar will head the new party but later a new leader can also be elected," the official said.

The party is expected to be launched in Kandahar, the last Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan.

Mullah Omar was inspired by the posthumous victory of US Senator Mel Carnahan, and the American Democratic party method of using dead voters, of which the Taliban will have a majority.
