Bush and Ziglar are down for this, as is Gray Davis. So while I might vote for say, a Bill Simon in the primary, I don't intend to spend my life being a captive vote for a party which holds my country and family and its laws in contempt. It is precisely because of this attitude that I would NOT support a Riordan, because I know where he stands (he's with these guys on it; they're looking to build a new slave class) but at the same time, if I wanted to hold out hope for a future that resembles the America I grew up in, I might want a RINO to win just to pave the way for a future real conservative. That was my attitude towards Riordan.
You ended your post saying I had to convince ten fellow Republicans to vote for Simon. At the end of working your butt off to do that, as many people did for Bush with his squeaker, how will you feel if Simon turns around and dumps on you? When Simon comes out and basically goes along with all Davis' policies, because in the end, they are the same policies that Bush endorses? At least with Riordan it wouldn't be a shock.
Riordan is Riordan, and he hasn't changed. He's going to say what he thinks, and 99% of it is liberal hyperbole. He's not going to change his position on abortion or abortion funding; he's not going to admit he was wrong about banning guns; he's never going to say the education bureaucracy has enough money; he's never going to say that his opposition to Prop. 22 (Defense of Marriage) was a mistake.
He really can't run to the right, no matter what he says or does.
And conservatives will stay home in droves on election day, and Davis will win in a landslide, and our grandchildren will continue to pay.
Bill Simon is a conservative, is intelligent, has reasoned ideas that will appeal to a broad group of people, and his principles are steadfast. he can beat Davis, and infact I believe is the only Republican candidate who has a shot.
Simon came out in opposition to Bush's amnesty proposal.
I would love to see a California where Bill Lockyer can't go on a Kristallnacht gun confiscation adventure, where education is actually about teaching and not socialist indoctrination, where the family is revered as the foundation of society and the overall theme is one of creating a world where it's considered quite normal to think that you can walk through any neighborhood and be utterly safe, and in the presence of your countrymen. The country used to be like that.
Is Simon committed to that? Oh, I'm sure. But if he shows signs of independence from Bush's beloved goal of ethnically balkanizing the US for fun and profit (mostly profit), Bush's enforcers will stomp on him. And if that's true, how will the CA GOP go all out to get him elected, as I said? I don't see them doing it.
I don't know everything about Bill Simon, but what I know so far I like. I don't think he's the type of person to cave on anything he has taken a principled stand. He came out in opposition to AB25, which basically undid Prop. 22 in California. In fact, he was the ONLY Republican to come out against it before Davis signed it -- that took courage.
Simon is pro-life, and he has a strong faith. He is on the board of Heritage Foundation and involved in a lot of charitable organizations. He has a solid finance background and supports tax cuts.
He is conserative on social AND fiscal issues. Will he "cave" on anything? Maybe. Will Richard Riordan cave? On everything.
I am willing to take my chances on Bill Simon because I believe he is a man of depth, faith and integrity. If he fails me, so be it, but I have to vote for the person I think is the best leader for the state, the best leader for the Republicans, the most conservative on the issues, and has the ability to win.
That man is Bill Simon.
Weyrich hit the nail on the head with this one. We don't have to vote for the "lessor of two evils" ... we have a good guy in Bill Simon.
