And Bush originally said there wouldn't be any amnesties, and then proceeded to call for just that, albeit under any name but that, and basically surrendering immigration policy of the United States to Fox. The principal place where the effects of this occur are in - California! At which point, all of the issues you mentioned become irrelevant because he has basically sold California for Texas votes. Why should I think Simon won't go along with this? He's not going to stand in the way of the national party.

I would love to see a California where Bill Lockyer can't go on a Kristallnacht gun confiscation adventure, where education is actually about teaching and not socialist indoctrination, where the family is revered as the foundation of society and the overall theme is one of creating a world where it's considered quite normal to think that you can walk through any neighborhood and be utterly safe, and in the presence of your countrymen. The country used to be like that.

Is Simon committed to that? Oh, I'm sure. But if he shows signs of independence from Bush's beloved goal of ethnically balkanizing the US for fun and profit (mostly profit), Bush's enforcers will stomp on him. And if that's true, how will the CA GOP go all out to get him elected, as I said? I don't see them doing it.

I wish I can give you the assurances you want, but I can't. In politics, sometimes people you like and trust cave. Sometimes they don't. Ronald Reagan -- largely the reason I am a Republican today -- wasn't perfect. But he was good for Republicans, good for conservatives, and did more good things than bad things. I think you would agree that we would both be voting for Ronald Reagan again.

I don't know everything about Bill Simon, but what I know so far I like. I don't think he's the type of person to cave on anything he has taken a principled stand. He came out in opposition to AB25, which basically undid Prop. 22 in California. In fact, he was the ONLY Republican to come out against it before Davis signed it -- that took courage.

Simon is pro-life, and he has a strong faith. He is on the board of Heritage Foundation and involved in a lot of charitable organizations. He has a solid finance background and supports tax cuts.

He is conserative on social AND fiscal issues. Will he "cave" on anything? Maybe. Will Richard Riordan cave? On everything.

I am willing to take my chances on Bill Simon because I believe he is a man of depth, faith and integrity. If he fails me, so be it, but I have to vote for the person I think is the best leader for the state, the best leader for the Republicans, the most conservative on the issues, and has the ability to win.

That man is Bill Simon.
