[[[ Excite@Home HAS gone dark !!! ]]] -- CableModem customers stranded!
12/01/2001 | Lazamataz

Posted on 12/01/2001 5:52:05 AM PST by Lazamataz

I'm an @home customer, AT&T to be exact. At 8:15 CST, I no longer could access any pages. Not google.com, not cnn.com, none of the old standbys that ALWAYS work.

I've heard a lot about the poaaibility of @Home pulling the plug on 4.1 million customers. Did it happen? The only reason I can connect at all is that my lovely and gracious fiance also has a dialup account for when she is on the road, and I am calling in here using that. I am presently on hold on the AT&T@Home help line. I'll have more information.

Technically, the light is on but no pages are being connected. My Cable Modem is up and connected but nothing loads.

not a particularly small town then or now.

I grew up in NYC when it had 1M more people than it does now. Please believe me when I say that Sioux Falls is a small town.

My favorite for storage efficiency was the TI-99-4A (Texas Instruments) that allowed any audio recorder to saave data to. This enabled me to write huge files to my reel-to-reel machine. Even with such a Rube Goldberg rig, it never lost a byte.

I wasn't much into the hardware end of things, but I do remember being on AOL during my amber screen days running DOS. That when they charged an incredible $2.95 an HOUR.

I still have an old PDP-8 with a teletype in the garage (still works). Not sure what to do with it. :) My main gaming computer, the one I am currently on is a 1.8Ghz P-4 with an Nvidia Gforce-3 vid card and 800Mhz dual channel ram. :)

Just called Comcast's customer hotline. The report, as of 10:00 AM EST is that they are negotiating around the clock and that Comcast is not aware of any service interruptions (I take it to mean interruptions on the Comcast network). There were no further details.

I was temporarily cut off from some "sights" last night as well. My provider is multi-homed, the routes over WorldCom (ie: to FR) worked fine, the routes over @Home's network (whatever that was) did not. Not long after that route was down did it come back online, this time on Exodus. The net was considerably slower last night as well. More traffic over fewer lines. Congestion.

You can add ATT - Folsom/Sacramento to your outage chart...stuck on AOhell via landline for awhile I guess, and to think I was running at T3 speed just last night...

Neat site for measuring speed. Here's my Cox connection. Glad I don't have to go back to "ugh" yet.

Your download speed : 1735503 bps, or 1735 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 211.8 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 283486 bps, or 283 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Neat site. Very useful. Thanks. This explains why I had a slow connection -- along with everyone else -- yesterday afternoon. The 30 day graph shows yesterday was as slow as things have been since Nov 8-11.

My speed was the same as yours! Thanks for the link. I feel sorry for everyone else on the dial-up connections, though.

Obviously, Laz, cable modems in the Phoenix area have not been affected yet.
