They continue to salute his back as he walks away. This kind of salute has not been seen in the previous eight years, though it is customary courtesy to the Commander-in- Chief. That long held tradition comes from shipboard Marines. Part of their job was (and still is on large vessels) to physically protect the captain of the ship. By turning to face him as the captain walked away he was gesturing his commitment to that duty. It is a Marine's way of saying "I've got your back, sir."

Remember the story from early in the Clinton years, when some unfortunate military officer was assigned to ride in a limousine with Chelsea? She freaked out like Freedy Krueger had gotten in the car with her. Her parents had drilled her to loathe the military from birth.
The Officer never broke decorum. He simply exited the car and didn't say a word.
Thanks for the flag to this thread, Sabertooth.
Your memory is correct. Here is a quote from
www.truthinmedia.org:
"'During Clintons first year in office,' writes (the U.S. Marines) Lt. Col. Tom McKenney in the (1994) book, 'The Clinton Chronicles,' 'an incident occurred which was buried by the news media.'
'The occasion was a departure for a state function, a routine operation,' Col. McKenney writes. 'Vehicles were lined up outside the White House...
Young Chelsea Clinton, like everyone else, was assigned a specific sedan.' But when Chelsea was about to get into her limo, she turned around and declared: 'I wont ride in this car! Theres a military man in here, and I dont ride with military men!'
The 'military man' happened to be a senior U.S. officer.
Being a gentleman, however, he quietly got out of the car and found another ride.
In a separate incident, Chelsea asked her young Marine security escort to wear civilian clothes in the future. 'My family doesnt like military people,' she explained.
Where, do you suppose, the 'young Chelsea' acquired such attitudes? At her home, of course.
And those are the two women (Hillary and Chelsea) whom President Clinton sent in March (1996) to boost the morale of our troops in Bosnia?
Thats like sending 'Hanoi Jane' to cheer up U.S. troops in Vietnam'!"

All right, I've been lurking around tonight, but this dude really po'd me. I'm looking for a few good Freepers so that we can make sure Corn on the Cob1 gets 'de-poled'. Anyone who makes such stupid comments needs to have 'pole removed from posterior end.'

Combine President Bush's character with his first-class foreign policy team (maybe Powell's a bit iffy), and even one such as Yours Truly can feel that this necessary war on terrorism is being handled correctly. More importantly, after eight years of the First Monster, seeing Laura Bush with him is really terrific. They're a helluva pair. The Kid.

I saw it too. I also remember that when the president first entered the helicopter as President, the marine not only saluted him, but turned to face him to receive his orders, a courtesy NEVER accorded to Clinton. As my friend says, leave it to the marines! I'm really surpirised ANY conservative would try to put down the professionalism of the Corps in such a way!
This is a LIE!!!
Marines, above all else are PROFESSIONALS.
You DARE to suggest a Marine would be this callously unprofessional? What kind of American are you?
As proof, I give you this link to the snopes site. You are spreading urban legends and lies, bringing into doubt the professionalism of the Corps!
Truth about this Urban Legend
In the military, one salutes the rank, not the man.
I honestly cannot stand it when somebody would dare to bring down the Corps the way you have it. It turns my stomach and makes my blood boil. Klinton was a major league immoral a$$, bordering on traitorous, but suggesting a Marine would decide to directly disobey standing orders about protocol involving the office of the presidency he is assigned to serve is beyond the pale.
Are you really some kind of Democratic plant to try and pin such dishonor on a Marine and the Corps?

I've seen other photos of GW and his Scottie, and again his genuine humanity shines through. Scotties are weird and smart dogs, and only a true doglover would put up with their weirdness. Everything about Bush is genuine. LOL! humanity thats for sure! Out of so many dog breeds, instead of getting "a dawg"...he has a Scottie! Those dogs are hillairous, funny looking, and smart too. Dubya's sense of humor shines brightly though Barney ;)

One more small, unscripted act of kindness and honor...thanks you so much for sharing this, Norb.
To: Redcloak
I saw the slickmeister walk by and never salute. This sob was above the military which he hated.
To: Major Jim
I needed it too, I'm just sorry that it got ruined by somebody attempting to suggest Marines were dishonorable in this thread.

Here is a story I remember hearing about in the early days of Clinton's first term. Clinton was so bad at saluting Marines as he boarded Marine One and at the time he was fighting for Don't Ask Don't Tell that his Les Aspin assigned a young Marine E-2 show Clinton the right way to salute on Saturday in The West Wing. The guy was and remain a disgrace!!!
