Gov. Gray Davis likely has made Clint Eastwood's day. Davis has appointed the actor to the State Park and Recreation Commission, aides announced Friday. Eastwood, also a golf course owner who served as mayor of Carmel from 1986 to 1988, has long been an activist for environmental and other issues.

"Commission members are unpaid and serve four-year terms. The position requires Senate confirmation."

Unpaid commission? What is this? Who will Eastwood be "serving" anyways? Commie traitors Feinstein and Boxer? This is a joke but it ain't on me.

I think Eastwood would be wise to just back out of this appointment. It is an insult to his intelligence and time!

Eastwood accepts new role on state parks panel

GOV. DAVIS PICKS TO HELP OVERSEE THE NATURAL, THE SCENIC AND THE HISTORIC

BY PAUL ROGERS
Mercury News

Thinking about skipping out on your camping fees? From now on ask yourself: Do you feel lucky, punk?

Dirty Harry is a parks commissioner.

Gov. Gray Davis on Friday named Clint Eastwood to the California Park and Recreation Commission. The nine-member body meets every other month to set rules for some of the state's most scenic beaches, forests and historic sites.

Eastwood, 71, has starred in such films as ``Dirty Harry'' and ``Unforgiven.''

``The governor made our day,'' said Rusty Areias, state parks director. ``He'll be an outstanding addition to the commission.''

``I'll be the new kid on the block,'' Eastwood said. ``California probably has more diversity in parks than just about any state in the union. There are redwoods, waterfalls, you name it, and they are the best kept secret going. It's important to keep them and nurture them and make sure they stay pristine.''

Areias, a friend of Eastwood's, asked him to apply when a vacancy came up.

The no-nonsense actor, a Republican, served as mayor of Carmel from 1986 to 1988, drawing crowds of tourists to routine city meetings. He has done public service TV spots for state parks for years.

Will the commission -- whose next meeting is scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles -- need extra security for curious tourists?

``I've seen some of his movies,'' Areias said. ``If his movies are any indication, he does his own security pretty well.''

That's funny. I thought Davis was trying to weed out the "Neanderthals" in the Park Service, to bring it more in line with the "mainstream" of twentieth-century recreation management, and make it more responsive to the demands of the "minorities." Appointing Clint just doesn't seem to fit, although it is "stylish," I'll give you that.
