TBN Televangelists Buy $5,000,000 Home
Deception in the Church ^ | Nov.4,2001, page K15 | LOS ANGELES TIMES,

DITC Commentary: Ever wonder where all those "seed faith" dontations are going? Whose getting rich again? Remind me. It thought it was those people who sent in their seed faith donations who were going to get a "100 fold increase" and that they would be the ones buying luxury homes. What a shock to find out it doesn't work out that way! Duh!!!!

Televangelists JAN and PAUL CROUCH of the Costa Mesa-based Trinity Broadcasting Network have purchased a Newport Beach house for close to $5 million, Orange County Realtors say.

>the property tax on that in CA would run $62,500 per year...a sum that would be more than most pastors earn, I would imagine, and certainly enough to make a decent living out of, and even afford a decent home

I accept your arithmetic, but it has nothing to do with anything.

Unlike Morality, numbers are relative. These may be big numbers to you, but not to someone else. I repeat, would it be OK if a $5M home resold for $10M in a few years? Would Jesus say then that he was a good and wise steward for so managing his affairs?

I am a Christian and I watch some of the programming on TBN. I will confess to being torn in my opinion of it's owners.

I have found some great programming on the channel. I have enjoyed listening to many of the ministers on the channel. Tommy Teney is one that I particulary enjoy ( he is the author of The God Chasers ).

I have turned the channel quite often when I hear the pleading for $$$. I believe that we should be the stewards of what Gid has given us and provide for His work. On the other hand, I believe that if the work being done is TRULY his then He will always make a way for it to continue.

I guess the ultimate judge of the Crouch's and the others will be God. If the ministry has been used to reach ONE soul, just one is it worth it?

I find it difficult to judge these people not knowing their hearts as I believe that only God may truly pass judgement. I do believe in rebuke if another is misappropriating ministry funds. I do believe in prosperity but not always as being a financial gain. I always believe in healing but not that you havbe to pay for it via a donation to any ministry. Faith is free.

If Paul Crouch has financed this home off of the sales of his book and recent movie endeavors and if he donates to his own ministry then I hold him blameless and consider him to be blessed. If not then I say that he needs to be rebuked and to step down.

I believe that an audit of their financial accounts is readily available to all who request it. I am not sure though.

I am not defending the ministry but I am not condemning it either. I will simply use prayer and discernment in the matter. I don't envy the Crouch's ability to purchase their home. If it is an honest purchase then I am happy that they are blessed. If not, then I am sincerely disappointed as they will only hinder the work that the Lord desires to have done and that is spreading the gospel.

More like, good luck trying to get through that needle gate with your camel laden down with all those ill gotten gains. These people are shams, they beg for money and produce nothing whatsoever for it. This is not God's work, this is blasphemy.

As a matter of fact, there is a passage in the Bible that deals with speaking in tongues, and it specifically directs followers who possess this "gift", not to do it in public where non-believers will see them because they will be skeptical and frightened.

You're referring to the following passages. You have the right book, the right attitude of what non-believers will think, but the wrong prescript for it. In a nutshell, it says: When you speak in tongues, the non-believers will think you're mad, but do it anyway, in the hopes that the non-believers will be "convicted".

1 Corinthians 14:22 Thus, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers.

1 Corinthians 14:23 If, therefore, the whole church assembles and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?

1 Corinthians 14:24-25 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.

1 Corinthians 14:39 So, my brethren, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues;

Is it too late for me to get into this religion scam business? Good night, I though that when the Bakers got enmeshed in too much dough and sex, these TV evangelical weirdos would disappear, but now there are even more of them! People are so gullible it's amazing.

A graduate of the Tammy Faye Schol of Cosmetology.

Actually Tammy Faye got it from her.

Actually they scraped off Tammy Faye's make-up and found Jimmy Hoffa. When they scraped off Jan Crouch's they found Osama bin Laden.

Oh, I certainly agree with all that, but Christians look silly when they present themselves as judges of others monetary affairs, especially when they don't really understand money larger than their own paychecks. Money is a ridiculous ground on which to impeach a religious scoundrel when there is so much else of real theological value to work with.

Sounds more like ENVY to me.

????Them or me? I assure you I do not envy anyone getting rich off of donations from little old ladies. That's not earning money by the way I define it. That's deception because when they ask for money they imply it is NEEDED. If they receive more than they need it should be returned to the donors. (same concept as taxes, thank you)I could live with them making an excellent salary---but nothing near the amount it would take to sustain a 5 mil house.

If, on the other hand, they made their millions by a means other than ministry, then I take back what I said. I would be wrong, though it still looks bad.

You sound like a financial genius, how would you feel if the $5M became $10M when the valuable property was resold in a few years? Would Jesus praise them for being prudent and wise stewards of His possessions?
