Houston: Orlando Sanchez Has Slight Edge
KPRC/Survey USA and KHOU/Hou Chronicle | Nov. 28, 2001

Two polls have come out today in the Houston mayoral race:

(1) In an election for mayor of Houston today, 11-28, Orlando Sanchez defeats Lee Brown, according to this exclusive KPRC-TV News Election Poll of 500 likely voters conducted 11-26 and 11-27 by SurveyUSA.

Today, Sanchez takes 53% of the vote, Brown takes 46%.

Brown is chosen almost universally by African-American voters, and by three-fourths of Democrats. Women are split. Independents pick Sanchez by seven points. Sanchez takes all other demographics.

(2) A KHOU/Houston Chronicle poll conducted last weekend with a +/- 3.4 margin of error gives Sanchez 42% versus Brown's 41%. Bell voters, who would have broken 63% to 19% for Sanchez after Nov. 6 now unfortunately break 45% to 39% for Brown.

(3) Rudy Giuliani and George W. have both endorsed Sanchez in the last two days. Giuliani has recorded a TV ad for Orlando Sanchez.

Two corrections/clarifications:
1. The Bell voters still break in Sanchez favor, 45 to 39%. Thus, there shouldn't be cause for too much concern in terms of indicating a trend b/c...
2. The first poll was taken in October, before the runoff. Some of those 63% probably voted for Sanchez in November.

I can't wait to see the Rudy ad! This is great news. Did you see where Councilman Castillo endorsed Orlando after voting for Brown originally? Looks like the negative attack ads are not working. Wish Sylvia Garcia had gotten on board the Sanchez victory train. Her loss.

The debate is tomorrow (Thursday) but it won't change my mind, I already voted (early voting Tuesday) for Sanchez. Had a 30+ minute wait because of the line.

Rain's coming down hard out there tonight. Any bets on where this election will go if we get more flooding by Friday night?
