Years ago, Mr. uvular was stationed in Texas (Army), and they went to help out in the aftermath of a tornado. Red Cross was there, and he said they charged the servicemen for coffee and donuts!

I've seen other such stories posted by freepers; would never give 'em a dime.

Exactly the same thing happened in France in WWI. The Red Cross was bitterly resented by the troops there. The Salvation Army was beloved. Amazing how little has changed in 80+ years.
