Four Palestinian schoolchildren, aged between six and 14, were killed in a blast after one of them kicked an unexploded Israeli tank shell that had been fired in recent days, Palestinian security officials Colonel Khaled Abu al-Ula said.
The children found the shell in scrub land close to the Jewish settlement of Nezer Hazani in the central Gaza Strip, as they were making their way to school in the Palestinian town of Khan Yunis, said a farmer whose tomato field is next to the area.
Hospital officials said they had taken charge of one intact body and three pairs of severed hands.
Despite the state of mutilation, the victims were identified as Mohammed al-Astal, 14, his six-year-old brother Akrem, and their cousins Omer al-Astal, 14 and his brother Annis, 10.
Another member of the large al-Astal clan, 10-year-old Ahmed, was also seriously injured in the explosion.
Farmer Sobhi Hamed al-Astaf, a distant relative of the boys and whose land they were crossing, said it was the first time the children had found an unexploded shell in the area, "although the Israelis are always shelling and machine-gunning."
"This is horrible, I can't believe it happened in my field. The Israeli army has to stop. They're only children," he said.
Palestinian security officials had earlier accused the Israelis of firing tank shells in the area and killing three children, a charge the army denied.
The deaths shattered a relative calm of the last few days as Israelis and Palestinians awaited the arrival of two senior US officials trying to bring about a ceasefire.
In other incidents, Israeli soldiers captured six Palestinian students during an overnight raid into Palestinian-ruled territory near the West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestinian officials said Thursday.
Using a tank and armoured vehicles, the soldiers moved in to the university town of Bir Zeit and seized the students, who were members of the main Palestinian Islamic movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
One witness said the Israeli troops had filmed the capture on video.
The Israeli army meanwhile said it closed several Palestinian Authority offices near occupied east Jerusalem overnight in what it described as an operation to prevent "terrorist activities."
The offices in Azariya in the West Bank are used by Palestinian general intelligence services, preventative security and public security, an army spokesman said.
He said Azariya was in so-called zone B of the West Bank, under Palestinian civilian rule but Israeli security control.
"These offices were closed to prevent terrorist and illegal activities in Azariya," the official said, without providing details.

The boy was identified as Mohammed al-Astal, aged 12.
Four other children from the same extended family -- including another boy named Mohammed al-Astal, aged 14 -- were killed when one of them apparently kicked an unexploded Israeli tank shell in scrub land close to the Jewish settlement of Nezer Hazani.
The deaths brought to 982 the number of people killed since the start of the intifada, or Palestinian uprising, against Israeli occupation in September 2000, including 771 Palestinians and 189 Israelis.
Well frist they said the tank shelled the school. Then that was not true, so now it is an unexploded Israeli shell. It must be the crack PNA forensics team that made that conclusion.
The shell may or may not have been Israeli. I wish there was a source of facts from that region.

No I don't. A PA militant perhaps or an Israeli shell as suggested. Those seem the the two logical possiblities to me. What do you think?
Yes, it is a pity when anybody is killed in the fashion described in that article. But I'm cynical about the truthfulness of the information in the article.
My point was this... it is painfully obvious that the article's slant is intended to draw sympathy for the Palestinians and condemnation for the Jews. I simply don't believe them. How do we in fact know whether the story is as they've described? As for my name, I follow God... don't expect me to fit your ideals of what a Christian man ought to be. I will not waste compassion where none is shown.
