You are correct about their taking them away from the population as soon as the war was over. However, many were returned to their donors. I have seen a photo of a rifle with a plaque on it describing its trip and thanking for the loan.
People forget who we fought the revolution against. The World Trade Center was the second major attack on the United States proper (Hawaii was a territory in 1941.) The British burned the WHITE HOUSE in 1812!
