Sorry, but you really need to find a map. The Rockaways are most definitely EAST of JFK, and nowhere near the U.N.

You are correct; the plane took off toward the NW, banked left, and was heading SE when the trouble started.

I saw a map of the flight path on another thread, and it takes pretty much a straightout approach, with a little curve to avoid the JoCo wildlife preserve - which is SOP.
