New York-WABC, November 12, 2001) — A plane crashed Monday morning near Beach 129th Street and Newport Avenue, in the Rockaways, Queens.This is an area witnesses call a heavy populated area with many homes and local businesses.

Buildings are reportedly on fire in the neighborhood. Thick, black smoke could be seen. The plane was a Boeing 767, an American Airlines flight.

The Mayor's Office of Emergency Management has confirmed the plane was a Boeing 767, an American Airlines flight. The plane crashed at 9: 17 a.m.

The city has declared a Level One Emergency Mobilization for all of its emergency personnel. This plane was an inbound plane and there is no word on where it was coming from. New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was on his way to the scene of the accident.

All three New York City airports were closed after this crash. The FAA closed all of the airports and the airspace in the area around New York City. Also, all bridges and tunnels into the city are now closed and they are only open to emergency personnel.

There are early reports that four homes were on fire.

Kevin O' Rourke, Eyewitness: "I was walking home from the gym and I saw the engine fall off. The plane went to the side, and then the plane went down."

The plane was leaving JFK airport. It was going to Santa Domingo, and it was American Airlines Flight 587 and it left at 9:15 a.m. and it crashed at 9:17 a.m. The flight was an Airbus A306. Airbus planes hold nearly 350 people.

Sources say air traffic controllers received no emergency call from the pilots on the plane. The plane crashed just two minutes after take-off.

Yes, but I do not know if it can be effectively masked from scent.....
