Putin wants to become best buds with America. The Ruskies have plenty of oil that just needs to be properly pumped out of the ground and refined.
Well then, lets do business with the Ruskies. How better to change enemies into friends than to bring Russia from military enemy/rival to economic friend? Become free-market friends and raise the Ruskies standard of living.
Let the Saudis, Kuwaitis, UAE, Iraq and Iran keep their oil.

..... Let the Saudis, Kuwaitis, UAE, Iraq and Iran keep their oil .....

Until, some time in the not too distant future when the supply of "friendly oil" is running out and the price of "cheap oil" is $300.00 per barrel and then -- when we are most seriously disadvantaged by those facts -- and they are most empowered by them -- we will go to them for the oil by whose use we maintain Our FRaternal Republic and grease the wheels of Human Civilization!

Or we continue to piss in their pockets now and squeeze every last drop of their "unfriendly oil" out of their stinking shitholes while it is "cheap" -- and save ours -- and all of the world's other "friendly oil" until the $300.00 per barrel accrues only to us -- and to our friends?

Rad, I think you broke the code. I believe Bush is covering his bets by working with Putin to increase dramatically the portion of off-shore oil we get from Russia. It's the only option we have to bring pressure on the Saudi's and other Muslim/Oil countries to fight terrorism effectively. Right now, we can't go in there and dig them out ourselves - the middle-east would be in even more danger of exploding if we did.

Russia is just as worried about Muslim fundamentalism as we are. They desperately need hard currency foreign exchange. They have stuff we need. The whole senario makes too much sense for Bush and his policy team to ignore.

It will take a year or more to get meaningful amounts flowing out of Russia - so I think that Bush is keeping it under his hat right now.

The above is speculation on my part - I would love to hear comments from anyone who has solid information as to what may be going on!
