catstevens.com is the best official source of information. He's definitely Greek, not Jewish. He did a special segment of VH-1 "Behind the Music" where he explained his conversion at length. It did appear to be related to an incident where he almost drowned at a California beach. It also seemed to me like the press went out of its way went out its way to frame him for the Salman Rushdie quote. Cat/Yusuf was a real "Muslim newbie" at the time of the fatwa against Rushdie, and it wasn't hard for the UK tabloids to twist his words around to suit their purpose.
