"You may be referring to the pygmy mammoths"

Tongue-in-cheek aside, mammoths were related to elephants (and mastodons, and about a dozen other elephant-like species), but were not elephants. The pygmy mammoths were actually smaller than modern elephants (other species of mammoths, contrary to popular belief, were only a tad larger, with the largest being about four meters at the shoulder and weighing in at about 7500 kg. Modern elephants can reach 2.5-3 meters at the shoulder and some get as large as 3000-5000 kg).
