I believe that the United States and Israel, each country for its own reasons and it its own way, are flagships of the western civilization and both countries are under attack for that reason.

However, I agree with the author: the supporters of Isreal need to make the case for themselves, be it a civilizational argument along the lines that I presented, or some other argument.

Here is an interesting article that substantiates the assertion of common destiny of us and Israel, that I just made in the post above. The article takes a broader view on conflicts between civilizations on different stages of development, but many concrete examples there are about Israel and its predicament.

You must be kidding, Israel can be hardly called a "Western" country, let alone a "flagship".

Israel has competitive elections that on a number of occasions changed the course of that country.

Why do you feel the need to reform the government of people living half way around the world?

I don't feel such need in general. When the Western civilization to which I belong is attacked by bastards I would like the government where the bastards live to punish them as criminals and preempt future attacks; when a cooperation from those governments is not forthcoming, I wish to change them.
