Big Ugly Fat Fellows

Buff's,Ah! I love the sight of Carpet Bombing in the morning. Nothing like Whistleing Death falling all around! This is how I made my living for a time in the 1960's. As a Jet Engine Technician I would watch those Big Ugly Fat Fellows throw themselves off Paddy's Point on Guam laden with a full rack and bombays of ordinance on its way to Vietnam's jungles.

Contrary to popular belief we did not just kill a bunch of monkeys or lizzards. This still is the ultimate non nuclear weapons platform if used that way! It could be used as full nuclear if desired and then all bets are off. This is what terror is all about if you are on the receiving end of its load. The NVA crouching in the Central Highlands of Vietnam were burried alive in their tunnels never knowing what hit them from 7 miles up. They learned how to die in droves;ask the survivors if you can find any if it succeeded as a Terror Weapon! This weapon platform works equally as well in the windswept valleys of Afganistan as well as the high mountaious regions. This will seal them up to freeze in the dark. They will find it hard to keep from shaking not from the cold but from all the bombing going on all around them.

Even technology as old or older than the pilots flying them makes no difference, it still gets the desired results. Fear is instilled and the message is clear, choose where you want to die we can deliver the goods or the bads as the case may be. Sure makes me warm and fuzzy and brings a lot of memories flooding back reminding me of when I had a life that counted for something!

C'mon, Dave, 'fess up. There's only one "F" in BUF and it doesn't stand for "Fat"...or "Fellow"...

I got busted on the double F controversy this morning. For years I referred to B-52s as BUFFs, for Big Ugly Fat F*ckers. Now today, I was admonished to use just ONE F, because the B-52 is not fat.

Are you an ex BUF/BUFF crew member? Are others on line who can resolve this boiling controversy?

never a crew member here -- USAFA Class of 1980 for two years, left due to loss of PQ . . . . . crawled over BUFF's on occasion though -- never, ever heard an Air Force SAC officer refer to them as anything but BUFF's . . . . .

As a resident of I Corps for 13 wonderful months, I remember seeing the flash and feeling the rumble from miles away. I could only imagine what it was like "up close".

We at Barksdale considered the "BUF/BUFF" terminology to be embarrassingly "political" in usage. Only the Wing King and his assorted desk jockeys EVER used the term. Never the flight crews or us maintenance crew.

No - I'm an ex-Navy type who, er, spoke to these fellows on occasion from Point Yankee. Once upon a time, long, long ago...and they are anything but "fat" - overhead they look like a pencil attached to a boomerang. Underneath is a nice place to be at an airbase and living hell in a target zone.

Hmmm...Those of us at the 416th Bombardment Wing always referred to them as BUFFs--with 2 Fs.

This probably won't resolve the controversy, but in my day the B-52s were "BUF".

A "BUFF" was a "Big Ugly Friendly Fellow", Jolly Green Giant (CH-47?).
