FOX NEWS just reporting that there is a potential risk of a nuclear terrorist attack against the US, maybe within the Continental borders with a 'dirty nuke' that has been smuggled across the Mexican border.
This is the threat that AG Ashcroft warned about yesterday.

Dirty nuke? How about a real nuke? There are reports that bin Laden has acquired "backpack" nukes from the corrupt Russians. Look out! I think it's a matter of time before one goes off (or many) within our nation. The bigger question is: Do our leaders have the GUTS to do what is necessary to protect Americans? I seriously doubt it. Political correctness and stupidity will be our downfall. Better stock up on those canned goods and bottled water!

The sky has fallen! Do you live in a cave? Are you one of those fools with a false sense of security? Do you really believe the idiots in Washington can protect you? Wake up!

Would that be the article about the two groups with orange backpacks hiking Squaw Peak before dawn last week?

AGREE. Just ask the Romans about Attila the Hun. Oh, yes, I always forget. The HUNS won and the Romans were destoryed and Rome overrun. I hate that I always forget those minor parts of history.

(I asked someone about iodine last night and here is the email reply I received. Be careful taking iodine.)Saturated solution of Potassium Iodide (it is prescription) but you can get Potassium iodide tablets through mail order. The major problem of a nuclear exposure is radioactive iodine, the potassium iodide is taken up by the thyroid and shuts down, thus the radioactive iodine isn't taken up by the thyroid. Long term effects of the radioactive iodine exposure is thyroid cancer.

There are two types of "dirty Nukes" Both are described well in these posts.
One is A bonb designed to have persistent radioactive contamination along with its blast (overpressure) and heat effects.
Second is simply conventional explosive used to spread radioactive poison over large ares, perhaps size of Manhattan or D of C.
Both are bad news.

Yes, that's it! Could you post the link?

If they had it they would have already used it?
Where do you get your information? Are you privy to their strategy?
"Denial" is not a river in Egypt.

When detonated the radioactive debris is spread over a wide area. I understand the variables make this a difficult question to answer, so I am only asking for ballpark examples. Can you give an example (or examples) regarding the size of the dirty nuke and the size of the affected area?

If they had it, they would already have used it. I don't buy this line of reasoning. If you try, I know its tough, to think of this from their perspective, their goal is to set off a world jihad against the US. If that can be done without risking the possibility that muslim countries will be horrified (i.e. by using a conventional instead of a nuclear attack) then why do it? On the other hand, if they tried to accomplish this goal through conventional means and there is no sign of such a jihad congealing then maybe it becomes time to risk it. Sentiment is welling up that the US is bombing innocent muslims. So there will be less sympathy when such an atrocity is committed.

I hope Fox has REALLY good sources for this story... Actually I hope they're just blowing smoke out of their asses...

Yes, and sadly, protecting our borders is one of the actual responsibilities of our federal government.
It is more than a disgrace that this critical responsibility has been abdicated to focus on programs for which there is absolutely no mandate.

"Chicago are hit with dirty nukes and cordoned off for at least a month for decontamination?" I think decontamination of a city equals, abandonment. How would you decontaminate a whole city?

We need to hit them with something hard before they do it to us. We need to step up the offense. This is what Sen. Mccanin is talkiing about but a lot of people are against his ideas.

I think
this is it. There's been no follow-up from the poster of the article since then, however.
