Two Police officers have been treated for exposure to toxic fumes after an explosive device blew up at the front door of the Oakland Police Department.

Investigators say officers in the station heard the explosion at about 11:30 last night.

The material has been identified as hydrochloric acid. One officer said the bomber may have placed aluminium in the plastic bottle of acid to make it explode.

And there's a BIG difference in them, too. If Oakley, it's most likely some local punks.

Yep, this is a cheap variant of the old dry ice in a plastic bottle trick. I had friends who did this during my misspent youth. You use swimming pool acid and aluminum foil in a plastic coke bottle. It makes a hell of a bang, but doesn't do much damage other than leaving a puddle of noxious acid which is a minor hazard in itself.

Which is to say it most definitely was not terrorists. This is the kind of crap neighborhood kids do in many towns for a few laughs.

Did the bomb blow up when they were by it or did they come in contact with the acid after the fact?

My Mom lives in Oakley, hard to imagine this sort of thing going on there. This little delta town is starting to sound more like Oakland all the time.

OAKLEY -- Authorities are investigating a mysterious chemical that was used to cause a small explosion outside the Oakley Police Department late Sunday, forcing two officers to be treated a local hospital with burning eyes and throats.

Several officers were changing their clothes about 11 p.m. during shift changes inside the police department when they were startled by a loud boom.

Fearing that it was a shotgun blast, three officers, guns drawn, scrambled out to investigate.

Oakley police Officer Mike Lee and Contra Costa County sheriff's Sgt. Tom Conger were immediately overcome by the fumes near the front entrance to the station, said Oakley Sgt. Jeff Billeci.

The officers complained of burning eyes, throats and nasal passages. They were rushed via ambulance to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch, where they were treated and released.

The explosion did not damage to the building. Officers said the fumes seemed to dissipate quickly.

Officers did not see anyone during a search afterward.

Early today, a county hazardous materials unit collected samples at the scene, which were to be analyzed at a crime lab in Martinez.

Big difference. This sounds like kids in Oakley.

A few days after 9-11, our Wal-Mart had about 5-6 of these "bombs" found.
I know one went off on the Halloween candy aisle and another in the men's clothes section.
They made everyone leave, which really upset one old lady who didn't want to leave without buying her jar of cherries.

It was done by two boys, 12 and 13 years old.
