Mohamed Atta, identified by authorities as coordinator of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, sat on his mother's lap until the day he enrolled at Cairo University, according to his father. Pattycake/pattycake as a teenager is, to say the least, warped.
It seems that Mama's Boy Mo scorned women, even refused to shake their hands. In the statement he left behind, he requested that no women attend his funeral.
He may have rejected the urge to love in this world, waiting to unleash his libido on 70 virgins in paradise, which, according to certain interpretations of Muslim scripture, is the reward he thought would be bestowed on him for crashing American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center and perishing in a hellish furnace of jet fuel.
But some of the other hijackers, evidently less other-worldly than Atta, sought out some action before punching their tickets to paradise.
-- The manager of a Daytona Beach strip club said three of the hijackers spent up to $300 apiece on lap dances and drinks before the attack. One proclaimed, "America's going to see bloodshed."
-- On the night before the attack, four hijackers stayed at a hotel in Boston's Park Square and called escort services, according to the Boston Globe.
The price at one was $400. They declined.
-- Hijackers from each of the four flights made at least six trips to Vegas over the summer and engaged in "some decidedly un-Islamic sampling of prohibited pleasures in America's capital of moral corrosion," wrote Kevin Fagan, who covered the Vegas angle for The Chronicle.
But for them, as well as Atta on his mom's knee, the infantile fantasy of infinite nights surrounded by 70 adoring virgins in an Arabic version of the Garden of Eden may have been a factor -- perhaps the key factor for young single men in hunger of flesh -- driving them into oblivion -- along with more than 5,000 others.
This version of paradise is a contested issue among theologians.
On the Web site groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message, Syed Kamran Mirza says, "Sex and violence are pillars of Islam," and heaven is "an open sex market." He posted selected passages from the Koran and attendant commentaries which do have an enticing ring.
They say the warrior for the faith who dies while slaying infidels is favored in paradise. He arrives at a cool oasis, reclines on "green cushions" and relaxes among "bashful, high-bosomed virgins." These "dark-eyed" maidens ("houris" in Greek) have transparent bodies which look like "red wine in a white glass." They are free from the "pollution" of menstruation, urination and pregnancy. No matter at what age he dies, the martyr among his banquet of 70 sweet pets becomes a permanent 30-year-old blessed with "virility equal to that of a hundred men."
Nonsense, say others.
Hafiz Khlid Siddiqi is a religious scholar educated in Cairo who teaches at Chabot College in Hayward and Mission College in Santa Clara. "The terrorists are misreading the Koran. Paradise is for the decent, pure, clean and innocent.
You can't compare anything on earth to paradise. Only sick minds would think about sex in heaven," he said.
Sister Mary Ann Farina, an adjunct professor at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, said Catholics and Muslims "share the idea that not just a soul goes to heaven, but a body in some glorified form where there is no need for sex." She added that the terrorists are being manipulated by teachers who are "stimulating them with images which have nothing to do with the concept of paradise."
Ziauddin Sardar, author of "Introducing Muhammed," says the terrorists banked on this twisted payoff. Islamic heaven is not "some kind of brothel that provides the services of '70 virgins' to its denizens," wrote Sardar in the Guardian. Heaven is a "place of sublime innocence," he says, and the virgins "have never cast their gaze on sin." They "utter only one word: 'Peace, peace.'"

I have heard a number of muslims claim that these terrorists have misinterpreted the Koran and that their opinions are not shared by the majority 'peaceful' muslims. So I ask you, where are the majority 'peaceful' muslims who should be denouncing such despicable acts?
