Actually my father was a WWII veteran and personally recounted the story of his company (1390th Combat Engineers attached to the US 9th Armored Division) being ordered to Dachau to witness the slaughter perpetrated by the SS and their civilian employees. Other US Army divisions were sent to this and other camps as both witnesses to the fact that this really happened, and to show the US fighting man exactly what he was fighting to defeat. That's the purpose of what I said.

Yes, Army people were ordered to go and look at the death camps at the end of WWII. They were ordered to go there by General Eisenhower. In fact, he ordered his own son to go there.
He stated that he was afraid that in time people would gloss it over or refuse to believe it, and that he wanted as many witnesses as possible so that it would never be forgotten.
