I must say that I find one of the most hypocritical and obnoxious things in the world these days to be the sudden world fetish with the issue of whether the US should stop bombing the Taliban for Ramadan. Bush is so obsessed with sucking up to Moslem countries, many of whose politicians no doubt cheered discretely when bin Laden blew up the World Trade Center, that he is putting out feelers about perhaps stopping the attacks on the Taliban come Ramadan, in a few weeks.
There are some problems with all this. First, the Moslem world has never had any problems with attacking other people on THEIR holidays. One need not even recall the Yom Kippur attack on Israel. There were the Rosh Hashana pogroms last year, cheered on by most of the Moslem world, plus the annual Palestinian atrocities against Jews on Purim, also cheered on. Then there are the Islamist attacks on Christians on Christmas, like the pogrom against Christians in Indonesia in 2000, or against Christians in South Africa in 1996. And the Lebanese Southern Christians were never offered holiday reprise by the Hizbollah.
Second, the Moslems themselves have never regarded Ramadan as a time to end hostilities. Sadat picked Ramadan in 1973 specifically as the right time to attack Israel. Iraq and Iran never stopped bombing the bejeebers out of one another for Ramadan during their war. The PLO has never called off its atrocities during Ramadan.
Third, there is ample precedent for keeping up the pressure even during Ramadan. Even Bill Clinton bombed Iraq during Ramadan in 1998. The Russians of course never stopped attacking the Chechnyans during Ramadan. I do not recall any Albanians last year during Ramadan calling for ceasefires with Macedonians, or before that with Serbs.
So stop with the weepy-pooh tear jerks. Bombs away. Allah is with the Yanks
I answered that question, National Cheese week is much more sacred
Heretic! An avenging army of gherkins shall be thy doom.
This is war, maybe not officially declared by Congress in Constitutional fashion ( Remedy this Please, Congress!). DECLARE WAR AND DO IT NOW!
There are no holidays in war. Three words will bring this out:
We learned that one the hard way. No more Vietnam political micromanagement. Been there, done that, never again. There are a lot of names on a granite wall in DC who would agree if they were here to speak alongside me.
We should agressively pursue the conduct of this war until the objectives are met. No holidays, no cease-fires, no break. The object of war is pure and simple: Kill the enemy, and destroy their infrastructure until they are unable to wage war. In the case of terrorism this may involve more than one country. So be it.
We are, whether the ostriches in this country see it or not, under a biological attack, and being threatened over and over. We are being demoralized from our own news media who seems to be acting as the Taliban News Network where agitprop is broadcast as truth. Any use of a WMD, and that is what ChemBio is, folks, get used to it, requires a response that will be unmistakable by the terrorists. Any terrorist supporting country providing the facilities and funding for the manufacture of ChemBio material requires sterilization and cautery using the following method: vitrification within a green glass matrix, under intrastellar temperatures..
Trinitite also looks rather pretty in color recon photos.
Any halt to hostilities will allow the enemy to regroup, rearm, and retrain. We must not let this happen.
Ramadan? what Ramadan? LET'S ROLL, AND KEEP ROLLING ON UNTIL THE CANCER OF TERRORISM IS REMOVED FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH
Keep the Faith for Freedom
MAY GOD BLESS AND PROTECT THIS HONORABLE REPUBLIC

WELL! It seems to me that "Ramadan" is an "Islamic" Holiday!
Isn't that when, ("Holy Holidays,") some form of "Amnesty" is given to "Infidels?"
Isn't "Ramadan" when "Infidels" are SUPPOSED to be given "a Chance" to "come to their senses," & become "Muslim??"
Oh, Well, I suppose I've 'got it wrong again,' & "Ramadan" is just another hiatus in the "Slaughter!"
I SINCERELY HOPE the "Muslims" on FR understand the Historic magnitude of their blunders!
Islam is rapidly becoming "Anathema!"--a dangerous collection of "Pseudo-beliefs" vehemently rejected by ALL CIVILIZED CULTURES!
In the Past Century, show "the World" ONE positive contribution of "Islamic Culture!"
In he past TEN Centuries, show us TWO positive & "unique" contributions to our Culture!
Considering the Damage "Islam" has inflicted on the GREATEST Civilization of MANKIND in Recorded History, "Islam" has a LOT of "Explaining" to do!
So far, "Islam" has "come across" as WEAK, VINDICTIVE, PETTY, & IGNORANT!!
Americans are generally FAR MORE INTELLIGENT Than the "Imams" of Islam can comprehend!
"Islam" appears to be a "belief system" for the "uneducated Rabble!"
How Sad! (& how "sick!") The "Imams" appear to be "preying on" the Ignorant!
So "History" repeats itself!
Doc
Yep. And that it is a war on Islam in which we can't quite bring ourselves to pull the trigger. And that it is a war (as we've been accused) that's kinda electronic, like a video game, where you can "pause it", get a snack, and go back to blasting.
No, my take on this is that, hey, there is a tradition in Islam that you get instant paradise for martyrdom during jihad -- but that's doubly so if it occurs during ramadan. We should help to accommodate 'em in that tradition (and they should love us for it).
It would constitute lending aid and comfort to our enemy.
We should not worry about "igniting" Muslim hatred as this was done in 732 AD and has yet to subside.
We must rather focus on "extinguishing" the hatred that typifies much of the religion of Islam.
The people with the "kill em all" attitude against the afghanistan are racist and hateful folk and nothing else.
Separation of church and state mandates that there be no concession in war to Ramadan which is a religous holiday which cannot be recognised by secular government.
Remember there can be no observance of religious practices in processes of government as that might offend sensitivities of the atheits among us. Besides the government then would be required to give equal treatment to Cristianity and we can't have that, now can we? /sarcasm
PC is a double edged sword, it has been known to bite hypocrites that try to wield it.
