Go Ahead, Microsoft, Flatter Apple Again

Mac heads shouldn't get too upset when they see how closely Windows XP apes Apple's OS X. In the long run, imitation can only help Jobs & Co.

Even though Windows XP won't be officially released until Oct. 25, I can hear the Mac faithful howling already. Once again, Mac heads are accusing Microsoft of building its latest PC operating system on innovations pioneered at Apple. And, quite frankly, they have a point. New XP features such as Windows Movie Maker, My Pictures, and the revamped Windows Media Player strike me as awfully similar to Apple's iMovie, Image Capture, and iTunes software.

Ahem. This is supposed to be a family web site. Harumph. Harumph.

Still, it is pretty darn funny!

"I got my wife one for Christmas last year and have had to do absolutely nothing to it since."

Really?

No "just cuddling?" No "talks about the relationship?"

"Quantity has a quality all its own."

Apple is the Betamax of computers. Technically superior, perhaps. And a loser in the marketplace.

All of this spouting is simply avoiding one simple truth: people vote with their dollars, and they voted for Microsoft.

Get over it. The rest of us just get on with it.

"The ONLY way APPLE will take over the market (and they SHOULD because it has ALWAYS been superior) is to be..."

Heheheheheh, ever notice how appleheads always have to slip in the obligatory reference to The Superiority of their toy? You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of the way the radical islamists always pepper their references to Muhamed with "(peace be unto him)" -- frequently abbreviated to "(PBUH)".

Say, I'll bet the appleheads could save a lot of keystrokes the same way! Since both religions have the same requirement, I don't see why an abbreviation wouldn't be acceptable to the Mac Mullahas. Let's see how that would look, shall we?

"The ONLY way APPLE will take over the market (IHABS) is to be..."

Yeah, it'll do.

I don't know if it's re-instated or not, but used it in case it is..... my last understanding was that it would ping everyone on a thread....not all users.

If it did that, accept my apologies

Does it also help you to know that Microsoft could put Apple out of business in the time it would take to conduct a business meeting?

Does it help you to know that if Microsoft were ever stupid enough to do that, it wouldn't EXIST a few monhts later? It is accepted business reality that the only thing that has saved MS from being chopped up into tiny piece years ago is the continued existence of Apple. Without Apple, MS's market share is essentially 100%. That is a monopoly, and no White House to the left of Harry Browne would put up with it for a second.

"Plug and Play? first available on the Mac..... when you control the hardware and the OS, you pretty much can enforce that"

Yeah, and you can only get away with that when you're not a monopoly.

"You got it. Apple's claims to innovation have always been grossly exaggerated. In the early 1980s they used Xerox's development of a graphical interface with point-and-click for the Macintosh, and then sued Microsoft for doing the same thing."

And then Xerox sued Apple. :)

What goes around comes around...

"It reminds me of the Soviet Union."

Hey, that's a good one! Really funny! You know why? Because the Mac cult reminds me of the Church of Scientology!

On almost any other subject, the FR family gets it right.

But on the Mac, there as those as tunnel-visioned as the ravenous loons championing Gore.

Some important reasons why a Mac might appear to offer more than a PC:

1. The Mac is a hardware/operating system MONOPOLY. You have one choice - Apple. Exactly how would this 'outrage' continue were it as popular as a WIN/PC? What has Microsoft done that even compares to this, and yet has attracted the Anti-Trust economy destroyers?;

2. When you standardize on quality hardware, peripherals, and software, the WIN/PC is extremely robust. But many disaffected WIN/PC owners purchased the cheapest basement clones their brother-in-law could find them, bitch about performance, and then blame Microsoft;

3. The lack of popularity of the Mac has lead to less cutting-edge, less-frequent and less-adventurous hardware and software development, which is always more prone to instability. When you're running fast, very fast, sometimes you bump your elbow - deal with it.;

4. Most virus writers could give a flying f&#! whether they take down the 217 computer users still running a Mac. Superiority? Mac's are just a poor target, compared to the rich target of Microsoft users. Ask why 9/11 didn't happen in Tijuana;

5. Interestingly, in my experience, Mac users are a breed apart - somewhat kindred spirits to Democrats!

- Notoriously narrow-minded and incurious - ignorance is bliss;

- Image-oriented ("I want a blueberry iMac!");

- Narcissistic, pompous;

- They blame their problems on other people or things;

- They prefer that the world would just stop - "no more changes, OK?";

- They are actually comforted by limitations - makes 'em feel cozy;

- They think they are 'cooler' than the rest of us. Apple 'culture' marketing is a sham. You see, Gates is a geek, Jobs wears black turtlenecks and is a bit-o'-the-rogue. Laughable!

There was a time when the WIN/PC vs. Mac wars were at a fever pitch.

Kicking Apple nowadays is like swatting flies - the necessity remains, but the challenge is long gone.

"** Public Schools LOVE Macs and buy them like mad ! **"

Wow, endorsed by the American public school system.

And they brag about that???

How sad...

>You must be forgetting PhotoShop: MacOS is the platform of choice for Photoshop...

No, I wasn't forgetting Photoshop. And I wasn't forgetting Pagemaker, either. And I wasn't forgetting Hypercard. Or Coral Logo. Or Balance of Power. Or any of the others we could both name.

But I think my overall points are still valid. (There are some beautiful teenage girls in San Jose. There are MANY beautiful teenage girls in Los Angeles.)

(I'm not as up-to-date on the computer biz as I once was, but last I heard, Adobe had changed and made Windows their primary development environment in-house.)
