Southerners have always been the most patriotic Americans, and the ones most likely to enlist in the armed forces. Why do you think a southern drawl is almost de rigeur in all of the branches?
I can almost guarantee that the people waving Confederate flags are the ones MOST likely to sign up and MOST likely to end up in combat units.
So there is a very good chance that these boys will be dropped "over Afganistan" or anywhere else when their country calls, and they will go willingly because that is their Southern tradition, of which the Confederacy and its images are an integral part.
