i'm actually intereted in getting information as to what bullet diameter is best for an unmodified mini-30. .308 or .311?
as to pistols, i can provide several answers: .45. .45. .45.

I have a S&W .380. I like the hollow point. It's only good for close work. Easly carried in back pocket unseen. It gets off 7 rounds in 2.5 seconds. If you don't hit them, you will scare them to death.

I have a Ruger Mini 14 and a Ruger Ranch Rifle. They are virtually the same rifle, but they are .223. I don't know about the Mini 30.
I have a couple of .40 S&W pistols and a few .45s, so I have my pick.

what bullet diameter is best for an unmodified mini-30. .308 or .311? Don't take this as a definitive answer, but I'd strongly suggest sticking with the .308 bullets for any "30 cal." weapon.
Use the .311 bullets only in "303" rifles, generally Enfields.

Re 308 and 311. I used to own a Mini 30 and I was concerned about this as well. I wrote Ruger and they replied that neither bullet diameter would adversely affect the rifle but that there might be an effect on accuracy. Any effect would depend upon the rifle, IOW, see what shoots best in your rifle.
