Effectiveness of Various Ammunition
Self ^ | 10-17-2001 | Don Myers

Posted on 10/16/2001 11:19:38 PM PDT by Don Myers

This is a vanity post. Many of us have different types of firearms. But what do we really know about the effectiveness of various ammunition? There are diffent types of bullets, the part of the cartridge that comes out of the barrel to make sure we have the terminology right.

For instance, the 7.62 X 39 comes in Full Metal Jacket, Hollowpoint, softpoint, and Armor Piercing. How does each one compare in stopping power with themselves and other rounds?

The .45 comes in FMJ and various hollowpoints. How do they compare in stopping power with the .40 S&W round?

If anyone would like to answer these questions, please feel free. I would like to know.

I have a S&W .380. I like the hollow point. It's only good for close work. Easly carried in back pocket unseen. It gets off 7 rounds in 2.5 seconds. If you don't hit them, you will scare them to death.

I have a Ruger Mini 14 and a Ruger Ranch Rifle. They are virtually the same rifle, but they are .223. I don't know about the Mini 30.

I have a couple of .40 S&W pistols and a few .45s, so I have my pick.

I have a Baretta Tomcat in .32 ACP. I load it with silvertips. I can easily slip it into my pants pocket. I understand the round has good stopping power.

"I carry a ruger p-90 in .45 loaded with 185 silver tip hollow points"

I have one of those in my collection. I seldom carry it now. For a larger pistol that is still concealable, I went to a Sig Model 239 in .40 S&W. I normally now just slip my Baretta .32 in my pants pocket.

Odd as it seems, .223 55gr fmj does more damage than the AK47 7.62X39.

DOD did some major studies on this. I think I have some bookmarks. I'll have to look. Otherwise, you'll find a wealth of info at ar15.com. There are lots of very knowlegable people that frequent that forum.

The Emerson decision is the latest 2nd Amendment issue running hot right now.

Yeah, we on occasion talk about guns.

My carry is a .45 Mini Commander with a .38 "Liberty" Airweight backup, loaded with Federal
124 gr. Hydro-Shok.

"liberty" = that traitorous gun company we shall not call by name, though I bought it before their treason.

"Are 2nd Amendment issues discussed around here much? "

Actually, yes. They pop up on a frequent basis.

The 380 can be loaded to be more or less equivalent to the 38. And most of the 380 autos are not imprecise guns, although the sights may be a little rudimentary out of the box.

there's lots of wicked ammo out there. you can even make your own 'evil stuff'. a 'full metal jacket' was adopted by the geneva convention to 'minimize damage' when shooting the enemy. it is illegal to use when hunting. 'black talon' is a max damage ammo. 'corbon' is another powerhouse. hollow points and soft points are made to expand and do maximum damage. i feel that all cops should carry .41 or .44 magnums & full auto weapons to fight the likes of the 2 moron bank robbers in L.A.

if you remember the zapruder film, you will see the effects of a high powered rifle and why snipers are so feared, and carlos hathcock was so devastating as a sniper in vietnam.
