Anthrax letter scare at Brandeis University
Brandeis email | 10-15-01 | JeffMill

Employees and students at Brandeis University, a traditionally Jewish college in Waltham, Mass. received this email and voicemail this morning:

To: The Brandeis Community
From: President Reinharz

Earlier this morning a suspicious envelope arrived at the President's Office. The Office of Public Safety immediately notified the Waltham Fire Department which is investigating the incident. As a precautionary measure, the Fire Department evacuated Bernstein-Marcus and Gryzmish until they complete their investigation. We will inform the community as soon as the investigation is completed. We will keep you updated as developments occur. In the meantime, classes are in session and other offices in the University are proceeding with business as usual. There is absolutely no reason for undue alarm but the President would like to request that anyone on campus - students, staff, administrators and faculty be careful with any unfamiliar package or envelope. Everyone in the country is on a heightened state of alert and we should be as well.

I have a feeling this is not a hoax. Brandeis would be a tempting target for the terrorist cells that I'm sure are still active in Boston. :(

I haven't heard much more from my friends who work there, but apparently, they've got firefighters in respirators going in.

Frankly, I think it's just as likely this is some kook with a grudge as much as it might be terror cells.

Then again, what's the difference?
