Dennis, I thought you might find some of Edward Said's comments in this OP-ED in Al-Ahram interesting. There's a lot of odious BS in it, of course, but some of his comments about Arafat, elections and homicide bombings may indicate something hopeful from your perspective.

I will read it but even without looking I'll bet he comes down on Arafat. Many Pallies take silly swipes at Arafat while the meat of their argument is how to bring about the demise of Israel. I detest Said just by the phony NYC lefty intellectual life he leads, which Columbia University makes all possible. Here's the fraud throwing some stones on the West Bank a few years back:

What a piece of crud. I could only read 3 paragraphs and skimmed the rest. His writing sytle is sneaky and repellent. I just can't stand Said. This pretentious crap prolly goes over well in Egypt where Al-Aharam is published.
