Cottonwoods release their "cotton" in the spring, it's how they spread seeds. At least they do here in Indiana, anyway.

   Thanks for bringing that up. With the preliminary web-search I've been doing, it seems that cottonwoods and spiders normally exhibit the kind of activity theorized here in the spring.

   At this point, I don't believe what I'm seeing is either one of those.
