I pulled this from fox news, I feel that until the United Way gets it act together, Donations should be given to more stable charities. United Way is generally a liberal organization. Therefore, I think it's wrong for this website to show a link to the United Way website.

United way is all screwed up, don't give them your money.

At this time the charities which seem to really help N.Y.C are as follows.

1) Red Cross.
2) NYC Firemen/Police fund
3) NYC victims family fund and
4) The Salvation Army, the rest are questionable

Very good list! I had dealings with the United Way when my boss was head of the Military Affairs portion and I vowed then to never, ever give one cent to the United Way. My boss was a volunteer but almost everyone we dealt with was a paid staffer and at high salaries not too mention their offices were plush!

We cut off the United Way when the United Way cut off the Boy Scouts of America. USO is another good charity to contribute and you can also find a G.I. penpal there. www.uso.org Semper Fi, Mike

The United Way STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN. Out here in Sacramento, the United Way STOPPED FUNDING FOR THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA! They do, however, believe in funding pro-homosexual, anti-family organizations. This is sickening when there are so many great organizations that do such great work. I hope Fox news pursues them like stink on sh--. For victory & freedom!!!

Never give a penny to the United Way. They are a bunch of shake down artists. They try to get supervisors to intimidate employees (especially in local government) into contributing. One of the past big wigs was flying all around the country first class and drawing some monster salary. Remember, they support Planned Parenthood, but not the Boy Scouts. You figure it out.

NO. The Red Cross charges the victims for the aid they recieve.
Our area was once hit with a flood that completely covered our home.
The government RENTED us trailors until we could all repair the homes we had left.
The Red Cross charged us for the food, clothing, blankets, etc. that we recieved from them.
The Salvation Army was also handing out food, clothing, blankets, etc. FOR FREE.
I'll never forget recieving a bill from the Red Cross for their services when we had lost everything we had to our name.
Ever since, the Salvation Army has been our favorite charity.
God Bless those folks.
They were there for US. THEY GAVE FREELY.

P.S. The United way sucks. You all know about that one.
It's like donating to Clintonism and the politically correct left wing cult.

When I was in Marine Corps basic, my drill instructors told us how worthless the Red Cross is. The officer who swore me in, a real WWII hero with 50 missions over Europe, told me the same thing. Based on that information, I have never given the Red Cross a penny. My money goes to the Salvation Army when we have a need at the national level. Otherwise, I prefer to donate directly to our local charities. No UW middleman for me.

By the way, that man, William Aramony, was being paid more than $300,000 a year to run the United Way.

You gotta be kidding me. Sounds like this bunch are nothing but money-grubbing middle men. I stopped giving to them when they slammed the BSA anyway. They'll never get another penny from me.

I have heard the same thing from servicemen. In the snows of Korea, officers got hot coffee and doughnuts...not the enlisted men.

Give to the United Way and they take a 20+% cut to then give it to a charity. Pretty good racket!

I have a friend that was in the military during WWII. He said that the Red Cross R&R stations charged the GI's for coffee, donuts, etc. The USO gave it to them. He would NEVER give to the Red Cross.

The Salvation Army gives more bang for your buck. The rest are there to skim the maximum for themselves, as does United Way and the Red Cross.

I am the director of a small United Way in Ohio and believe me, I and my volunteer board of trustees, are far from liberal. Most United Way's are and their volunteers are very conservative. We oppose big government, believe in local control, DO NOT FUND PLANNED PARENTHOOD or GAY RIGHT ACTIVITIES and continue to strongly support the boy scouts. There are approximatelhy 2,000 UW's in the US, each and everyone is autonomous and run by local volunteers. Most belong to the United Way of America, (that's where Arimony was the Exec.) which is essentially a trade association, provides training opportunities, discounted supplies, national advertising etc. They have no say in who or who we don't fund, do not allocate any of their dues to agencies (such as planned parenthood)

I have been a lifelong conservative and freeper since 1998 and I really get frustrated when people speak out of their butts without researching the situation. I love Bill O'Rielly and was furious last night. I, as well as many other UW's, were also furious that the NY UW or UWA were unavailable for comment. Apparantly they will be on with him tonight.

Re: the UW September 11 fund. Before I accepted local donations to pass on (and we are passing 100% on, we consider these outside of our local campaign and there are no costs associated with it) I talked with the folks in NY. Obviously they are not only overwelmed with the task at hand responding to needs, but how to insure the funds are properly spent. A coalition was immediately formed including several trust funds and foundations. No one agency can just dispense the funds, which I feel totally appropriate. Think about the scandal if checks are immediately cut to families when it turns out they have over a million plus in insurance, or the sicko's who are faking that they have a dead relative. There are many issues more than just cutting checks to the victims like grief counseling and groups for the children. Maybe a grant will be given to an existing agency, but this is a service above and beyond what they might have been capable of doing without additional funds.

All I am saying is, give this a chance before jumping on the negative bandwagon. It is still so early to really assess then needs in NY, DC and for the airplane victims. It's been less than a month!

That being said, many freepers have ranted about the UW for years, and some for, what I consider, very legitimate reasons. There are some communities, where I to live and work which had cut out Boy Scouts or passed on dollars to Planned Parenthood, I would absolutely refuse to give.

What I ask is that you know your community and your UW, than make your choice. A long time contributor (and former board member and volunteer) came into my office a few weeks ago VERY upset because he understood that UW was against the boy scouts. I explained our position (which is we totally support them). He then said we should not be paying dues to UWA (which is MINIMAL, .7% of our $750,000 campaign). I explained that UWA is neutral on the whole subject as they are with anything and that we would not belong if they starting telling our community what we should or should not support. He then showed me a solititation for funds to support a legal battle in which it was IMPLIED that UNITED WAY was cutting out the Boy Scouts. Yes there are maybe 25 UW's that have cut funding, but that means 1750 continue to support them. Again know your facts and....yes..well freepers...flame on. I guess I asked for it.

If you have any specific questions re your community, feel free to freepmail me.

ALWAYS GIVE TO THE SALVATION ARMY.
They receive freely, and give freely.
Their labors are free to those in need.
I cannot praise them enough.
