Mr. Stevens' anthrax cultures showed it was sensitive (responded to) the usual antibiotics, including penicillin. Unfortunately, his case was too far advanced for the antibiotics to help him.

Weaponized anthrax is developed so that dispersal ability is maximum. It is very hard to do, as the stories indicated that the Florida attack was poorly done(larger particles mixed with smaller particles). We can be very glad making weaponized anthrax is extremely hard to do.

In fact, the only 2 countries I know of that can make weaponized anthrax and deliver it without destroying it are the US and Russia.

I am not a biologist nor do I pretend to be one but what I heard was that the strain from Boca raton did not match any labratory strains found at the CDC. This would indicate to my very limited knowledge of the subject that it was not consistent with any of the strains the CDC has isolated and researched. It implies nothing about genetic engineering and merely removes much of the doubt if there was any about this being intentional or a random natural event if anyone still had doubts.

The most ridiculous comment of the day came from a Dr. who was involved in the treatment of the Virgina case where the man involved has preliminary results that are negative for anthrax. He said that the hospital has no plans to test for anthrax in the future. Obviously given we have at least two people exposed and possibly a third (not the Virginia man) It would seem that all over the nation Hospitals and doctors should routinely take cultures from those who present flu-like symptoms. These cultures should then be tested to see if they are gram positive or gram negative. If gram positive then follow up testing should be done.

Whoever, may they get what they deserve. Didn't we hear that SayDamn has been doing this for years and as Mindbender26 told us, "we've known about it." I also heard that he uses this and other chemical/biological weapons on prisoners. I say take him out too, just for the freaking hell of it.

Umm, except for anyone DIRECTLY infected by terrorist action--can't be too many of us--we're only as much at risk from this as we would be from natural anthrax, which is very little. It is NOT very contagious as far as person-to-person contact goes. The most dangerous way to contract anthrax is by deeply inhaling very fine spores, and I think we'd be seeing a LOT MORE cases of it if the terrorists had had a good distribution system.

We're looking at a very serious INFLUENZA (flu) season this year. Given the fragile state of our economy and how edgy everyone will be about flu-like symptoms, it makes sense to take some precautions to protect yourself and your family. I think national attention needs to be paid to the behaviors that spread flu and the common cold. I am writing to President Bush to ask him to address the nation on how simple soap-and-water and the voluntary isolation of the sick could do wonders to slow any epidemic, natural or unnatural.

As for this thread, nobody has posted a link to anything that suggests that the FBI has really come out and said this is a terrorist attack. I myself don't think the FBI NEEDS to say any such thing--there has probably been an attempt by the enemy to infect our land with anthrax, and in my opinion it's shaping up to look like a failed attack. (I know the victim's family won't feel that way, but a successful attack would have thousands down by now.)

This thread is NOT a news thread and will probably be pulled if TPTB actually look at it and see that it is not linked. But I wanted to post this: even genetically engineered anthrax is still NOT going to be easy to catch. Even a very contagious disease can be STOPPED after the first or second wave if we pay attention to our bodies and seek to protect ourselves from germs in the old-fashioned way: wash your hands and avoid touching door handles and fixtures in public bathrooms. Make sure you have GAtorade and cold/flu/fever/cough/diarrhea remedies in your medicine cabinet NOW because if this does turn into the kind of flu season experts are predicting, drug stores may be OUT. That happens in NORMAL flu season and this is not a normal time! Tell your employers you want sick employees sent home. This isn't the time to mess around with that.

But really, these are things we should do every cold/flu season. If there is or is not an enemy bioattack in progress, it makes no real difference to how we should BEHAVE.

Nutcases need not be stupid--remember the mad bomber, Ted something or other? Brilliant, but completley bonkers. Also, do check #39: it is now known that the intern who most here chose for #1 perp candidate isn't Arab, as originally reported. But yes, as I stated, my theory is just that, and certainly open to change as facts present themselves.

One more thing that a lot of us might have forgotten--a few years ago, the anthrax threat was the threat of choice by dissatisfied people here in this country. Every so often someone would send an envelope with white powder claiming it was anthrax--well, if it was, no one seems to have taken ill from it, but I do recall several anthrax scares some years back. I think it might be those memories that made me wonder if this is more Taliban terror, or something else.

News is what effects people in their homes, towns, etc. A weaponsized strain of anthrax could be modified to have new powers of transmission, contagen, etc.

This is far from just chemistry.

Saddam Hussein/Iraq is the only rougue Muslim nation with this capability as far as I can see. Capability to make weaponized anthrax.

Possibly some could have been bought from rengegade Russian military.
