60 Minutes reported Sunday night that Iraq has a strain of smallpox.

Smallpox is a deadly and highly contagious virus.

Only two countries were believed to have strains of the virus, the U.S. and Russia.

60 Minutes' Mike Wallace reported this evening that Saddam Hussein acquired some of the smallpox virus from a laboratory in Russia.

Russian scientists have also been helping countries like Iraq and Iran developed biological weapons.

This may be the one and only chance to take out that bastard. I believe he is on the list, and this report, if it turns out to be true, may be the incentive for them to finally take Hussein out.

The quick answer is long ago, and not long enough, but I don't have details at hand.

My dad asked about that, and he was told 7-10 years.

The Aztecs, upon seeing their leader Moquetezuma dead, attacked the Spaniards with a vengeance. They drove them out of the city and many Spaniards drowned in the canals from the weight of the gold they were carrying. However, in spite of the initial defeat, the Spaniards left behind a devestating enemy, Smallpox.

The Spaniards returned five months later and with the help of allies, captured Tenochtitlan and razed it to the ground. The Aztec nation numbered 10 million when the Spaniards arrived in 1519 and within just a few years over eighty percent of the indigenous population died of Smallpox.

Vaccinations last 10 to 25 years. Ohhhhhhhh sorry you lose!

I think mandatory innoculations stopped about 1980.

"...I'm thinking something involving a lot of heat..."

It wouldn't surprise me if, before this business is over, nukes have been used.

And, if they are, it'll finally lay to rest the post-WW2 communist inspired myth that these weapons are genies possessed of some preternatural power that can never be allowed out of the bottle.

There have been any number of conflicts which could have been ended, with far fewer casualties in the long run, by the judicious use of a nuclear weapon early in the struggle.

It's time we gave the third worlders a choice... Live well (as we define it) or die badly.

After a few choose poorly those remaining will do better.

"Does anyone know the exact year mandatory smallpox vaccines were halted? Also, how long is the vaccine effective?"

Seems to me I read somwhere 1972. The doses prior to that were supposed to be effective for maybe a dozen years at the outside. No one knows how effective those old vaccinations will be against an epidemic.

But our kids are screwed.

I understand, from Mother who received her shot in 1932, the shot is lifetime protection. Boosters not required.
