Fired Conservative Columnist Anne Coulter Getting 'Great Publicity'
CNS News ^ | 10/2/01

Conservative columnist Ann Coulter, fired from her contributing editor perch at the National Review Online, blames it on free-speech hysteria in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. In a recent online column, Coulter opined that the United States should respond forcefully to the terrorist attacks: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity," she said. The comment provoked an uproar, and the National Review Online subsequently refused to run another Coulter piece in which she referred to "swarthy males." When Coulter complained, she was fired. Tuesday's Washington Post quotes Coulter as saying she doesn't need friends like that. "Every once in awhile they'll throw one of their people to the wolves to get good press in left-wing publications," she told the newspaper. National Review Online Editor Jonah Goldberg told the Post, "We didn't feel we wanted to be associated with the comments expressed in those two columns." Coulter told the Washington Post she's getting great publicity as a result of the flap.

I contend that the Bible says an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, that Anne in her educated observance of events and the cultural divide that we stand upon presents a problem that the Muslims have worked out quite well in their minds...and that the only response they will understand is the same one they threw in our faces: convert, or die.

However, being the enlightened person that I am, and the Christian I was brought up to be, I do not for one second believe that faith in God comes under the duress of the sword. But that the tactics that the Muslims be employed be used against them. What Anne said was no different than Jonah saying we should invade Africa and colonize it. If America is going to spend its resources becoming involved in a conflict or economic endeavor, then TOTAL immersion should take place.

Your references from the Bible do not stand in this situation. And using Bible reference to beat up MY particular beliefs is a kind of jihad I find offensive.

And your solution to this is to forcibly convert them to Christianity? What body parts do you plan to sever should they fail to comply?

You can not forcibly convert someone to Christianity. In fact you or I can not convert anyone to Christianity. By opening the borders of these countries to missionaries the spirit of the Lord will convert enough of these now free people. There will be no force or compulsion required.

Anne, don't tone it down. Don't apologize.

The only noteworthy (and embarrassing) element of this thread is that it took a woman to write the column I would have expected from a man.

I don't know how to post pictures, but I can learn. You got to tell me how to do it.

Do this:

I think that OWK would be willing to set you straight on that one :-) We've been doing this since long before you showed up here ( and at other sites too). How well does his brother know him?

If you know OWK that well, then you know he used to be a Christian. That he no longer accepts Christianity's truth claims does not mean that he is "frightened of the gospel".

BTW, I began lurking here about the same time you registered.

Ummmm -- I hate to interrupt this little sidetrack, but can anyone tell me what in the world the Jewish culture/religion has to do with any of this?? I'm afraid it makes absolutely no sense to me!! I'm following you, all right, but none of it has anything to do with Ann's column!!

You can not forcibly convert someone to Christianity.

Sure wish this was a universal understanding among all of the world's theologies.

The initiation of force is an inappropriate tool of ANY religious faith.

Think so....???? We live in the year 2001 now, y'know....things are a LITTLE different than they were during the inquisition, etc..... and if their idiotic leaders were gone, they would at least have CHOICES since Christians don't FORCE themselves (usually on others) they just strongly minister them in that direction.

The truth is, NR was a huge get for Anne, who is otherwise on assorted fringy publications. This is a big, big loss for her. She doesn't have much respectability among conservative journals because she's such a bomb-thrower.

For NR, this is nothing (if anything, it makes them look moderate to the Bushies, who are afraid of big mouths like Coulter).

For Coulter, this could mean a career relegated to the angry fringe, on the outside looking in.

mccain 2004 - your snideness, you continue to make false insinuations once again. You don't know me. But, we know you now. And not that you deserve to know, but, some of my best friends are Muslims AND Jews, some of them even fitting the description of "swarthy males" (Ann Coulter's words). ROTFL!

You obviously have a problem with organized religion and you are probably one of those secular scum who constantly nip at the heels of Christians like me. So begone with your "holier than thou" attitude and stop making false accusations on this thread!

Thing is, the issue on this thread IS NOT about whether or not Muslims should be converted, or how Christians should go about converting. Christians already know how to do that. Muslims have their own way. The issue of the thread is that Anne said use the Muslim way to fight back and NRO booted her because she said it, even though they had editorial veto and the tone and rhetoric was no different than Jonah saying Americans should commit full force and seizure of another continent. Both said them to fly in the face of logic and with the purpose of illustrating the absurd with teh absurd. But then, because Anne is female and reactive, and Jonah is male and editor, Anne gets canned, and Jonah doesn't.

THAT's the argument going on. Obscure Biblical quotes do nothing but show how the individual just wants to show everyone what a good little Christian HE/SHE is.

Bleh.

GO ANNE...GET YOUR GUNS and STICK TO 'EM.

Would we even be discussing this if she had said "convert them to Budhism"?

This country is founded on Christianity.

Nope.

The majority of our founding fathers were christians

Nope.

The majority of citizens at the time of our country's founding were Christians. But the majority of the founders were NOT orthodox Christians. They were deists and freethinkers. They were more influenced by the Enlightenment than they were by Christianity.

Our nation started out as inviting Jesus Christ to be our Lord.

Nope. I somehow don't recall seeing this in the Declaration of Independence or in the Constitution. References to God, sure, but no references in our founding documents to Jesus.

it is because Jesus is Lord over America that you enjoy this countries God given blessings and creativity.

Nope. We are not free because of the blood of Jesus. We are free because of the blood shed by men willing to fight and die for our freedom. And it is freedom which has given us prosperity and the ability to worship God as we see fit.
