Yes. And he said "Father forgive them for they know what they do." He did not say, "Tough Luck Fellows! You're in for it now!" He saw thru them and into them and he asked for forgiveness for them.

You seem like a reasonable and nice person. I would be remiss as a Christian if I didn't recommend that you prayerfully read the Bible. It is not about church affiliation, doctrine or denomination. With all due respect. I think you make the same mistake that alot of us do. We base our faith on the fact that God is a loving god. The mistake is that God is also a "just" god. If God is just He can't compromise on what his word says
