I don't want to sound cold hearted but I think he is a victim of complacency more than anything else. Getting an attitude adjustment would probably go a long way in improving his chances. Once he gets off the pity pot, he can pursue new challenges with a clear head and focus which the HR people can read so well.

I actually think there is a truth here, but there is huge fear too.

Have him read a book called "Who moved the cheese?"
He's Hem.

When it comes to work and women most men are like reptiles, either the 'sun-is-up' and they're on-the-go and hard to hold back or the sun-is-down and they're immobile, set in their ways, hunkered down, low-body temperature, and reclusive. Like finding a great woman your friend found a great job and frankly, went to ground. Hey, most men live their whole lives and never have the opportunity to get cumfy in the mud among some warm rocks. He should take stock, because "it ain't that bad when you've done so good" (Calypso Louie?). It just seems bad but it's relative to his former situation, not his present.

Problem for him is the suns been down too long and now it's getting chilly for him. So he's gonna want to settle further down in his spot to get the last bit of warmth out of it. Sounds like he's been doing that for about 10 yr.s now and now it's too cold so he's gotta face getting back out into the sun and get new work. It's quite understandable he's slow to rise. He's had it good and doesn't want to give up that great spot he's been in for 20 yr.s. I'd think the trick would be for him to find a nice place/occupation nearby what he's used to. I'd recommend AS/400 or even IBM Linux. The latter would take longer to get to but it's cutting edge for IBM's retail market. AS/400 would be a safe bet. It's only getting colder where he's at. No matter how good he is he cannot advance where he's at. He's gotta move.

Sorry, I don't mean to be crude or offensive it's just that the issue is a very fundamental one which men have been dealing with for oh, a few million years. If he's reluctant to move far there's a warm spot nearby, it's called IBM AS/400.
