Why else do you think are the Indians trying their best to suck up to the US; especially with the recent events. But it seems like the policy experts here have lost sight of the longer term problem that is China.

The Indians may try to suck up to America because that is what China did under the Clinton Admin.

What happened? The economic cooperation was crushed and China had a free run at all of the FDI in Asia with little or no competition to speak of.

Those sanctions on India prevented a great deal of business from being done there. They actually barred all economic cooperation with India. No loans, no financial support, nothing.

It helps to have friends in high places.
