Bush vs. Powell (Will Bush lead and demand that Powell follow?)
Washington Post ^ | 9/25/01 | Bill Kristol

Since his speech to Congress last Thursday, virtually every major political figure has gone out of his way to support the president. Except for his secretary of state. On the Sunday talk shows, Colin Powell revised or modified many of his boss's remarks.

The president devoted a good chunk of his speech to an indictment of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan: "In Afghanistan we see al Qaeda's vision for the world. Afghanistan's people have been brutalized . . . we condemn the Taliban regime." Further: "By aiding and abetting murder the Taliban regime is committing murder."

It seems that Mr. Krystol is having trouble coming to grips with the grim reality that even the bonefide liberals have accepted...GW Bush has successfully hidden his skills and intelligence from the press.

I am not worried about Collin Powell simply because President Bush selected him, and from the President's track record so far, he doesn't pick liabilities. His picks are based on the country's needs, putting the right person in the right job.

The previous administration was famous for tokenism.

Kristol and his Weekly Reader magazine should go crawl under the rock from which they came. Powell is doing a fine job. Kristol would like to see an all-out war between the US and the entire Arab world. This would certainly not be the US interests and has little to do with what happenedto the WTC and pentagon. We need to find the individuals responsible and take care of them.

Kristol is just ticked that his guy lost (McCain) and he's left outside of the administration. This guy has no relevance whatsoever.

I agree with you. I wouldn't vote for Powell unless I absolutely had to. I remember reading a column by Cal Thomas which indicated that during the Gulf War General Powell was trying to push for a kind of trench warfare similiar to that used in WWI. Mr. Thomas reported that General Schwarzkopf (sp?) flatly refused and said that if they pushed this idea further he would resign. Another thing I don't like about Powell is that during the Gulf War he seemed to be somewhat of a media whore.

...The first amendment still guarantees the right to make an ass of yourself. I do that almost every time I open my mouth.

I am right behind you on that one.

I think what many of us seem to forget is regardless of whatever opinion we hold regarding Colin Powell, one thing is true....he knows his role. He was a career soldier. He did not get to where he is by not obeying orders.

Whether or not he and the President argue policy behind close doors does not worry me in the least. I'd be willing to bet this is much more orchestrated than we know. Colin Powell is still enough of a soldier to know it is not his place to undermine the position of his boss. Especially when the world is on the brink.

Rush believes Powell is a loose cannon and Rush has known it since the beginning. Powell is a bad apple in this administration and I would love to see Powell "resign."

I think Kristol is right on in this article. Powell is a loose cannon and I think it was a big mistake for Bush to pick him as Secy of State because of his popularity.

Kristol is a loose cannon with his own agenda, and is bitter that he is out of the loop.

Everytime I heard Powell this year, before 9-11, he said things that just sounded whacky--hardly any improvement over Mad Madeleine. Constantly trashing Israel while people are having their guts blown out. Sheesh.

No big thing.

I've noticed on a lot of threads the the P's vs. I's topic gets ultra-hot in a hurry.

Methinks the trollers are working overtime these days.
