America’s Enemies Rally at UNC-Chapel Hill
By Michelle Oswell and Michael Burdei
FrontPageMagazine.com | September 21, 2001

A CONGREGATION of faithful left-wing fundamentalists descended en masse at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Monday night, to practice one of their most sacred rituals: spewing hatred for America.

"If I were the President…I would first apologize to all the widows and orphans, the tortured and the impoverished, and all the millions of other victims of American imperialism. Then . . . I would announce that America's global interventions had come to an end," preached William Blum, author of Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower.

"I would then reduce the military budget by at least 90 percent and I would use the savings to pay the reparations to our victims and to increase social services. . ."

Nod, nod, nod – clap, clap, clap responded the 700 faculty, students and community members in attendance.

"If one [of the perpetrators] is Osama bin Laden, send the international police for him and pick up Henry Kissinger and Augusto Pinochet on the way home," declared Catherine Lutz, professor of Anthropology.

This recipe for national suicide received boisterous applause from the crowd, who continued to nod, smile, cough, clap... everything but actually think. But none of that mattered at the moment. The crowd obviously liked what they heard.

The UNC Progressive Faculty Network sponsored this "teach-in" on September 17, titled "Understanding the Attack on America: an Alternative View." It provided neither an understanding of the attack nor any surprising sentiments from the left: just the same, tired rhetoric that Campus Leftists have been spouting for years.

The panelists stepped forward with one Anti-American libel after another, almost as if there were a competition among them to see who could hate our country the most. One crowd-pleaser was William Blum’s jab at Cuban immigrants and America’s relations with them.

"There are few if any nations in the world that have harbored more terrorists than the United States. And one example, the anti-Castro Cubans in Miami, have [performed] hundreds if not thousands of terrorist attacks in the U.S. and Cuba and elsewhere. All kinds of murders and bombings for decades, and they have been harbored here in safety for those decades."

UNC Sociology professor Charlie Kurzman blamed recent events on a Military Industrial Complex.

"We're…playing into the hands of our own militarists, whose interests always lie, I believe, in the exaggeration of threats, armed responses, and so on. In fact, I would argue that there is tacit collusion among the militarists of all sides."

Also drawing applause was a diatribe against the perennial scapegoat, the white male of European descent by self-proclaimed Arab-American activist and "person of color," Rania Masri.

"So it seems that simply looking Middle Eastern has become a crime. And this has further fueled the xenophobic sentiment that is taking hold of this country. And I say xenophobic because it’s not simply Arab-Americans, Muslim-Americans, and Indian-Americans that are being attacked, but also Asian-Americans, Korean-Americans, Chinese-Americans. Anyone who looks different than your typical white man."

The forum hit a new low, however, when panelist Stan Goff equated the terrorist attacks with the German Nazis’ torching of the Reichstag in 1933.

"The de facto executive branch and the compliant press are putting the historical spotlight right now on December 7, 1941, and Pearl Harbor," said Goff, a disgruntled former U.S. Army Ranger. "I think we need to aim that spotlight at February 27 in 1933 and the Reichstag fire."

The mere fact that the audience clapped and... yes, nodded their heads vigorously in agreement, made it all the more nauseating.

Afterwards a long-haired twenty-something peddled 50-cent copies of the Socialist Worker; and a local left-wing bookshop sold copies of panelists’ books.

All in all, it was a shameful example of how state-funded universities are responding to the deadliest terror attacks in our nation’s history.

To paraphrase the great American poet Ezra Pound, "Utopian blindness carried beyond a certain point becomes a public menace, and there is no cure for a sucker." Those 700 people who shook their heads up and down for three hours like baby rattles could do themselves and society an enormous favor: take a break.

Most of us are not that liberal (Gore won by just 2% here).
Flags everywhere where I'm from, put up right after the towers were hit.

Really, I'm not shocked...my brother was on campus when the vote for supporting Desert Storm
was in the Congress/Senate.
He related that a small contingent of anti-war/pacifists got a cold reception on the
main campus and basically got pursued by a much larger and more vocal pro-action group.

By the way, do you listen to The Hugh Hewitt Show? He's local here in Los Angeles/Glendale
but often talks about Minnesota because he's syndicated to a station in Minneapolis/St.Paul.
Sorry, but I can't remeber the frequency, but the station is called "The Patriot".
You might get details at www.hughhewitt.com or www.newstalk870.com; I think you
can still listen over the net at the later site, as it's run by Salem Radio Network.
I think it would broadcast from 8-11AM weekdays your time.

PS: If you do check out the Hewitt Show, you might be pleasantly surpised.
He usually closes the show with music from "Last of The Mohicans" (I don't know
if your "Hawkeye" is related to the old story or due to an Iowa connection).

...While the Nation is investigating everything, let's round up all the suspects. Starting with A1, sec9, p2. Next, A3, sec3, p1. And then, the usual Amendments; 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

...Step up and be heard. Thankyou for your testimony, now be seated and shut up!

...Did I miss anything? Feel free to add on...

Jesse Helms once said we should put a fence around Chapel Hill-Carrboro and call it the NC Zoo. He was right.

We'd all better care, bro. These losers have the ears and sympathies of the mainstream media and intelligencia, who in turn infect the mushbrained masses (Gen X and Gen.com especially). The enemy is within our borders, and in this case, are our "countrymen". Beneath a temporary veneer of national unity, we are still a house divided.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

A couple of Arab Americans have been murdered since the 11th. Many more "brown" people have been harassed for the evil done by a bunch of killers who happened to be Arabs. Unless I'm mistaken, an equivalent of this was not witnessed when Timothy McVeigh was found. Go figure.

You conviniently fail to mention that the reason stewardesses throats were slit and the over 6,000 Americans were burned to death, were crushed to death or were forced to fall to their deaths was for no other reason than the fact they were Americans.

After their deaths, countless Middle Easterners abroad and in the USA rejoiced. In Pakistan, "Death to America" riots broke out in the street.

There are over 285 million Americans and the best you can do to support your implication of American intolerance is to site two murders when murders occur in every major city in the USA every single day of the year and some vague reports of "harrassment".

If America were as intolerant as the homelands of these "brown" people, their blood would now be flowing in rivers down American streets.

If you are try to convince us that America is an intolerant and racist nation, you are going to have to do better than that.

I walked out of a dentist office the other day, because his diploma was from UNC-CH. I told them I didn't have any respect for the university nor anyone who graduated from there. I live in Charlotte and don't feel they are COMPETENT in any field the university has to offer.

It's great to live in a country where dissent is allowed. However, for these people to return to fantacy land so soon after the 9-11 wake-up call, is really pitiful.

I certainly hope these traitors are spared the uncertainty, fears, discomfort and inconvenience of old age -- or even middle age -- Oh what the heck, even tomorrow might be too difficult and offensive to their sensibilities.

I will pray for them though: "May God have mercy on their souls."

I do like the Scottish Fair. I know that it is also the seat of some pretty radical leftist groups like the "white culture" nuts.

If its any consolation to your opinion that North Carolina is no longer a place “proud of its American traditions”, I think that its only fair to realize that the faculty at UNC-CH (and the surrounding towns, for that matter) are comprised primarily of liberals from the Northeast.

It has always been my opinion that the school is an indoctrination camp of sorts, in which the Great White Hope from the North shows the ignorant country folk the errors in their ways of thought. At the same time, affirmative action reigns supreme, and standards are clearly lowered in the name of diversity. Unfortunately, many students who enter as freshmen with the values and beliefs of their parents leave as seniors with newfound attitudes contrary to those learned during their upbringing.

They go out into the world believing that they have been both educated and enlightened, not realizing that they likely had a better grasp on reality when they were in high school.

The "HATE AMERICA" &

"BLAME AMERICA FIRST"

crowds are thriving, living well, highly paid, spoiled, fawned upon, coddled, & not working too hard (thank you very much!),

in elite American Academia,

coddled by rich liberal or absent/AWOL parents,

by LEFTIST enormously well-endowed (by dead Capitalists, who are rolling over in their graves!) Private Foundations (which have been kidnapped by Leftist academic types), and

lavishly supported by OUR State & Federal TAX DOLLARS!

I'd love to get a hold of that disgruntled Army Ranger. Seems to me he forgot all about his fellow Rangers who scaled the cliffs at Pointe Du Hoc in Normandy and took out some German gun emplacements. Like Dick Cheney said (I don't remember the exact quote)if it weren't for our soldiers who fought and died in WWII, the whole world world would be speaking German now.

I guess these other communist/socialist wannabes will never realize that it was soldiers who fought for this country's independence from England (if I could time travel, I'd send them all back to the winter our soldiers spent at Valley Forge) and hence the Constitution was written, guaranteeing them their freedom of speech. Oh yeah right, what am I thinking?? I totally forgot the Constiution is EVIL because it was written by a bunch of white men, some of whom owned slaves.
