What is wrong with the military? Why did they tell US News this?

Either A) they paid someone enough to get them to leak or B) it is disinformation. IMO

I think they told them this because it is what they want the Afghans to think.

Certainly this will have the talibums looking over their shoulders, shooting at shadows, and generally psyching them out. It's a start.

My guess is Special Forces was in position within 48 hours of the attack. Very dangerous work.

U.S. special forces move near through Afghani borders
(like a hot knife through butter)

I'm telling you, I think the Taliban is secondary here. We're focusing so much JUST on bin Laden, but I think info like this is deliberate disinformation. Do not be surprised if this is a two-pronged assault on Afghanistan and Iraq. I think Saddam Hussein is going to wake up with his palace in ruins one of these mornings.

Yes-- get the critters to run to their holes, and we know where to throw smoke. I assume we are watching them closely by satellite.
To: Lotabrain
The Iraqi's were under the distinct impression that the 82nd airborne, during Desert Storm, were very brutal in their killing and it was widely thought by the Iraqis that the 82nd ate their victims slowly while alive.
Sometimes, the press is used in many ways other than giving up our locations.
Frankly, anyone silly enough to think bin Laden is reading FR to gain insight as to the location of troops also probably thinks the Chinese are massing at the Canadian border.

They want the bad guys to think they're anywhere and everywhere all at once.

The art of reporting is long gone.
Everything thing you see reported is hand fed to them and they'll lap it up.
That's all to the good, these news morons think they have a scoop .(CBS has just learned...)

Agreed!

like the 5000 marines offshore of kuwait about to execute the marine landing - way to go Cheney/Powell/W/etc! Let 'em get ready for teams of 3-5 commandos at the borders while we hail mary about 10,000 pro's into the heart of the beast.
To: Lotabrain
Why did they tell US News this?It doesn't have to be true to be effective.
To: Lady In Blue
Teams of three to five camouflaged soldiers are expected to soon deploy into Afghanistan's vast mountainous regions in an attempt to locate the elusive bin Laden... A senior official is describing how this will occur!?!?! Did he also supply their routes.
To: Bob Buchholz
hell, from all existing press reports, I could have written the story. Its a lot of smoke folks and says nothing. We already know of Special Ops in Pak and Takistan as well as Ubekistan (sp). That and a little stuff from wire reports and conjecture on aircraft etc...there you go.
Really a no brainer. Besides OBL isn't there anyway. Reports have him in China, Somalia, Libya, Lebanon, Sudan, Chechnya and Pakistan. He's here he's there, he's under the bed....
Most of these press reports are for at home consumption. No real military significance here. Besides, Its not the home press we have to worry about, its the foriegn press that would love to report US troop movements.
Its no great mystery when heicopters fly overhead in the desolete lands of Buttkissistan that our boys are probably there...

Could someone explain what the "Special Forces" are or would that be discribing secrets?
