House Intelligence Committee security risk Gary Condit toured Manhattan's Twin Tower disaster site Wednesday, in a visit deliberately kept secret from most of the press.
"Several members of the House Intelligence Committee, including Condit, arrived for a close-up look, and city officials showed them around the scarred streets and piles of rubble," sources told the New York Post.
Condit's visit was "kept under wraps," the paper said, in contrast to the highly publicized visits of most other public officials and dignitaries.
Mayor Giuliani was hosting French President Jacques Chirac for his own tour of the World Trade Center disaster, and did not meet with Condit or other Intelligence Committee members.
In August, House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt announced that he would consult with his colleagues on removing Condit from the sensitive post -- after many expressed fears that his continued access to the nation's top secrets make him highly blackmailable.
Last week congressional leaders complained that the Bush White House was limiting the information it was sharing with Congress about a planned military response to last Tuesday's attack.
But with secrecy at a premium as President Bush plans America's war on terrorism, Gephardt's failure to take care of his party's "Condit problem" may be behind the White House's decision to play things close to the vest.

He does appear to be a first-class creep. However, after all the intense media scrutiny he's been under these past few months (minus the past 8 or 9 days, of course) not a single shred of evidence has been uncovered to definitively link him to the disappearance of Chandra Levy. Is it possible that he had nothing to do with her disappearance and is "only" a creep? Most people around here refuse to believe it, although I think it is possible --although I wouldn't be shocked either way. But "innocent until proven guilty" applies to Democrats too, you know.

I think he was looking for a new place to stash Chandra's body.

Gary Condit should be, at least, moved off the Intel Committee ASAP. Quietly, if necessary, but quickly. And Alcee Hastings should be as well, while we're at it. We need people of good character and judgment on that committee right now, and those two certainly are neither.

He should still be kicked off the Intelligence Committee anyway. I don't care if he was a Republican or Democrat. He is a security risk. As far as being responsible for Chandra's disappearance - we will see!
I just get tired of these people in charge of our government not being able to keep their pants on!

Since bodyparts are being identified with DNA technology, this provided a great oppotunity for him to drop a finger or two at the scene.

"Since bodyparts are being identified with DNA technology, this provided a great oppotunity for him to drop a finger or two at the scene." LOL! Opinionator, you are worse than me (and I didn't think that was possible). We've been freeping this creep every Saturday at Noon at his Modesto district office and this Saturday will be no exception. We're madder than ever. NOW, MORE THAN EVER, Condit must go for the good of the country. How dare he show his scrawny face at the site of the carnage. If he hadn't been preoccupied with abusing interns, he'd have more time to spend looking out for our country's security. What a disgrace! Chandra Levy's body is still missing and he's out there poking around for other people's body parts. It's ghoulish to say the least. For victory & freedom!!!
