OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE RECALL JOHN MCCAIN COMMITTEE
SEPTEMBER 17, 2001
PHOENIX - This is a time when Americans must rally behind all their leaders, set differences aside, and unite against the forces of evil that have perpetrated and supported the savage attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. These deplorable acts of war committed against the United States have caused Americans to reassess their priorities and recognize once again that those who live in freedom must also be called upon to defend freedom.
This committee's purpose was to counter legislative threats to the constitutional freedoms guaranteed to all Americans. It is now apparent that there is a more immediate external threat to the freedoms we cherish. This country is at war, and as President Bush has stated, it is a very different kind of war. It is a war against enemies who hide themselves, but we will use every resource to seek them out for retribution. This is a war against enemies who covertly plan their despicable acts for years and we must be prepared for a long and difficult fight to defeat them. This is a war against enemies who have a fanatical belief in their cause, but they will soon learn they have severely underestimated our resolve for the cause of freedom.
With this moral cause in mind, our committee has decided that although our original goal was important, it is no longer in our state and nations best interest to remain divided over legislative differences. We began the recall effort to defend our constitutional rights. Now, our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is under clear and immediate danger from a well-organized international network of evil. Senator McCain has spoken out strongly against those who have attacked this nation and we pray that he will stress the need for us to set aside internal disagreements and demonstrate support for the Commander-in-Chief during this time of national crisis.
We are suspending our recall petition signing activities and will donate a significant amount of our remaining funds to The Arizona Republic Disaster Relief Fund (http://disasterrelief.azcentral.com). We strongly encourage others to do whatever they can to aid the victims of the September 11th attacks.
Our committee will maintain its database of volunteers in the event that Senator McCain's behavior warrants the continuation of the recall campaign. We will continue to maintain our website to monitor Senator McCain's public statements and legislation. The offices of The Recall John McCain Committee will remain open on a limited basis until September 28th to accept mail and phone messages After that time, we will continue to answer all inquiries via our internet website.
We are very grateful to all our recall volunteers, contributors and thousands upon thousands of petition signers for their efforts in the support of our constitution. While our nation is in turmoil, we will not continue the recall. Now is the time for us to focus our energies in demonstrating a united front against those who would threaten our national sovereignty.
Marcia Regan
Chairwoman
A special thank you to all the Freepers who have supported this recall effort is certainly in order. It has been very encouraging to have your support as we fought to preserve our constitutional rights.
I realize there are those who think we should have continued the recall, but those of us who have been out there actively circulating petitions have encountered more and more resistance from Arizona's registered voters. Before September 11th, the committee was confident that we could put on the final push to gather the required signatures. After the "Day of Infamy," the sentiment against McCain, although genuine, has been put on the back burner.
Right now, Congress will have its hands full taking care of the primary function of government - protecting its citizens.
However, should the country get back to normal and John McCain and his liberal friends decide to again attack our rights to free speech and to defend our families, this committee has a long list of reliable volunteers who will be prepared to launch another recall.
For now, proposed legislative threats to our freedom have been trumped - BIG TIME - by Osama's legions of terror.
Good.
It would be especially bad to go after him now when he supports Bush and a full-scale military response.
It would be disruptive and harmful to our country, and I know the "Recall McCain"ers don't want that.
(you made the right call)
But, I must concede that as much hell as FREEPERs have given McCain over the past few months, it pales in comparison to the kind of hell McCain would like to give Osama and his pals right about now.
I appreciate that Sen. McCain has really rallied behind the President.
Yup. Re: The terrorists, McCain said last week, "May God have mercy on their souls, because we won't."
On a personal note, I'm giving McCain a break just for that one line on the floor of Congress,
"God may have mercy on you, but we won't."
