"And it came to pass, that at midnight the Lord smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the first-born of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the first-born of cattle." Exodus 12:29

Then what do we do with this, the taking of children when judgment is handed down?

I'd say that's a pretty tough one for you to reconcile with the belief in a just and loving God.

You recognize one of two things.

Either the God you worship cannot be reconciled with the notion of a just and loving God.

Or

Those who chronicled his exploits, misattributed great evil to him.

The taking of innocent lives is evil.

It does not suddenly become good, when you attribute it to God.
