Whatever he would or wouldn't do, I would hope that he would do more than he did in WWII, because all he did then was make movies. Are you aware of the time he was booed off the stage in Hawaii by wounded Marines - during the war?

Ash what James Stewart would have done, he was a true hero. He also had a son (stepson - he would call him a son) die in combat in Vietnam. Some are talkers like Wayne, and some go do it. We need those who will get the job done, and not talk about it.

John Wanye was an actor ! He would do and say NOTHING which wasn't in some script. GET A GRIP ! Are you really THIS stupid / gullible, juvenile ?

Aren't there enough garbage vanities on FR ? Is your ego in such dire need, that you have to post this kind of adolescent drivel, so that you can pund your chest and see your idiotic words and know that you are the author of same ? How contemptably pathetic !

I think the Duke would have taken out some trash around this nation as well. I can't imagine him appreciating some of the folks on FR who offer so many excuses for the terrorist attack on this nation!

Tell that to those who have been murdered, and those who knew them . That is REALITY; John Wayne was an actor, who mouthed lines written by others.

Don't forget James Arness who went ashore at Normady in the first wave, in fact one of the first soldiers (partly because he was the tallest in his unit they would know if he went in over his head they weren't close enough)

Actually, John Wayne was a very good friend of Jimmy Stewart, and was there when Jimmy needed him most. I am most reminded of a story that I believe Stewart himself told during a "Tonight Show" interview in the late seventies:

Stewart's stepson Ronald, a Marine, was killed in June 1969 in Vietnam. Stewart was devastated, and as anyone who knows that time period, very aware of the stigma which the nation had attached to those who served in that war. Shortly after his stepson's death, Stewart and John Wayne stepped out of a building close to the Berkley campus only to find themselves on the outskirts of a massive anti-war demonstration. In the middle of this unwashed, unruly throng a Viet Cong flag proudly waved. Stewart saw it, and so did John Wayne; then, according to Jimmy Stewart, Wayne did a remarkable thing. He turned to Stewart and told him he'd "be right back". Wayne then disappeared into the gyrating mass. Stewart related that even though he couldn't see Wayne, he could tell EXACTLY where Wayne was in the crowd from the silence that evidently followed his path - and it lead straight to the Viet Cong flag. A big hand reached up, PULLED down the flag, then disappeared yet again, this time leaving silence spreading behind it - and when John Wayne appeared, he was carrying the balled-up Viet Cong flag in his hands...

This is a quote from actor that did nothing but make movies during WW2:

"Duke tried to enlist but was rejected because of an old football injury to his shoulder, his age (34), and his status as a married father of four. He flew to Washington to plead that he be allowed to join the Navy but was turned down. So he poured himself into the war effort by making inspirational war films-among them 'The Fighting Seabees', 'Back to Bataan' and 'They Were Expendable.' To those back home and others around the world he became a symbol of the determined American fighting man."

WWJWD? The same thing that RR would do. Two like-minded American patriots.

While it's true that he was an actor, he often went out of his way to help those in the military. Sometimes he was also a writer/director/producer, as in "The Alamo". What he says and does in those cases, is more reflective of him.

A guy I work with was an extra, while in flight training at Pensacola, for the movie "Wings of Eagles" (hope I've got the title correct). He also saw Wayne years later in Vietnam, or environs. He speaks highly of Wayne, I think highly of him, so I but great weight on his opinion.

My coworker retired as a Lt. Col. of Marines, and on Tuesday he was waxing nostalgic for Napalm. Later in the week he was speaking of Joe MudMarine slogging through Pakistan, and hopefully Pakistanis I inferred, with an M-16 and a bayonet. Of course he was "competing" with the retired KC-10 crew chief, who has a medalian inscribed with something like "TAKDSUFIT", "The Ass Kicking Doesn't Start Until the Fuel is Transferred".

This second guy had some interesting info from his son who is at Nellis, but I'll not post it, under the "Loose lips sink ships" rule. Suffice it to say that a whole bunch of ThreatCon 4 SOPs must have really kicked on Tuesday. Saw this same effect at our local Guard F-16 unit, but that was on the news, so I can relate it. Unit had several aircraft sitting at the end of the runway, loaded with "yellow ringed" (live) missles, canopies up, engines running. And they are a schoolhouse unit!
