My concern is that we not only have to respond to this attack. But preventing any future attacks.
The only way I can see to do this is to hit them so hard, they don't ever get up.

Who can argue with the sentiment? But what are the options? The Soviets invaded Afganistan because there were concerned about a rise in Islamic nationalism spilling over into Soviet Republics. All they ended up doing was radicalizing the population. Someone else pointed out, you've got a land locked country surrounded by mountains with little or no urban infrastructure and you're enemy is someone who rides around on camels with a cell phone.
