Proposition 40 — the billionaire wealth tax — had the support of about 43% of ballots cast as of 8:33 p.m, according to preliminary returns from the California Secretary of State. The Associated Press estimates about 41% of votes had been counted. There are also two billionaire-backed measures on the ballot — Propositions 41 and 42 — that would void the tax if either wins majority support; those measures would also need to surpass Prop. 40 in votes to have that impact.

The ruling elite spent more money opposing this tax than they would have had to pay. If they have this money laying around, surely they can afford to pay the tax.

No complaint here. First it would have a very dangerous precedent of taxing wealth instead of income. Second, it expressly authorized the legislature, in the future, to expand it to other income groups. Third, I refuse to play the democrat game of hating other people because they’re wealthier than me. Even at my considerably more modest income level, I hear way too much of i can afford to pay this tax at this or that level, and I don’t need this or that tax break
California has never let a tax they like go undone editing the rules ensues.
Billionaires are moving out of California like the black plague is on the move.
The geniuses who cooked this up never thought of that.
