As the first gunshot pierced the sound of crashing waves and children’s laughter, Rabbi Leibel Lazaroff instinctively hit the ground.
Having grown up in Texas and trained to carry a firearm in his home state, he knew the noise of gunfire well. But the 21-year-old American couldn’t fathom that a shooting was unfolding here in Australia, a nation globally renowned for its strict gun laws.
It would be another five to 10 seconds before many others at the Bondi Beach Chanukah by the Sea celebration realised that the loud bangs echoing across the waterfront of the country’s most iconic beach weren’t fireworks or popping balloons.
Those seconds would prove crucial. An inquiry later heard that father and son Sajid and Naveed Akram shot 11 people, 10 fatally, in the first 29 seconds of their hateful rampage that ultimately claimed 15 lives.
As Leibel crouched listening to the gunshots and screams trying to formulate a plan to fight back, NSW police Constable Scott Dyson was retreating towards his position while firing at the gunmen.
“He was walking backwards towards me, screaming, ‘I’ve been shot, I’ve been shot’, and he fell next to me,” Lazaroff says.
The young rabbi comforted the officer as he used his shirt as a makeshift tourniquet to stem the bleeding from a bullet wound to his shoulder.
“Then I proceeded to ask him for the gun, I told him, ‘I’m from Texas, I’m trained, I know how to shoot, please give me the weapon’,” he says.
At that moment, his mentor and friend Rabbi Eli Schlanger screamed out a warning that one of the shooters was heading straight towards them.
Lazaroff helped the wounded officer back to his feet and propped him up from behind as Dyson bravely returned fire at the approaching shooter before collapsing again.

Rules and laws restricting citizens firearms use always give criminals the upper hand. Liberty is protected by firearms, full stop.
The thing is that really isn’t true.
Self defence is absolutely legal in Australia, including using a gun if necessary.
I’m not surprised somebody from out of Australia doesn’t get that. But it is.
But police officers are certainly trained not to give up their guns while they are using them. And Constable Dyson was still using his until the moment he went down by all accounts I’ve seen.
I wasn’t there, so I’m not sure if and why somebody couldn’t have picked it up after that. I’ll look into that when I have a chance.
Also look into how long NSW coppers took to get off their butts and walk the couple of blocks from their police station to the shooting.
NSW’s gov’mt arranged this, even to the point of local coppers being told to drag their feet or stand down (think Uvalde). From this the State gov’mt got to seize more citizen’s guns.
That was the point. And, sacrificing another copper was a small, insignificant, price.
Given that few in such an event (and in most circumstances at a beach, etc.) would be armed, I wonder if it would make sense for beach security personnel, even lifeguards, etc., to have small drones at hand, to harass terrorists, crazy shooters, gangs, assorted thugs, and so on.
