President Donald Trump on Monday pushed back on growing calls for greater regulation of artificial intelligence, and lashed out at Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei following his urgent plea for an AI slowdown.
“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

You can’t put the genie back in the bottle. The Chinese are certainly not trying. Either America keeps up, innovates and secures or it too shall pass.
What specifically is an “AI slowdown”? Can this be defined in specific terms? Is this like an “assault weapons ban”?
Our patch cadence for our installed hardware has increased quite a bit since the first of the year.

If history teaches anything, it teaches that Great Powers who “slow” technology end up being destroyed and carved up. China was the dominant technological power in the 1200s and 1300s. It decided to turn inward and stopped advancing. It ultimately got carved up and humiliated by the West. The Ottoman Empire was a technological juggernaut in the 1600s to the point where it could have advanced its conquests much further into central Europe and the German territories. Then a religious debate was won by those who turned away from technology and by the early 1800s, the Ottomans were the Sick Man of Europe who were carved up and humiliated. Slow AI? What does that even mean? What it really means is the US stops working on it what China and Russia advance. Maybe we put some international protocol in place that no one else follows but that gives us some false comfort like Kellogg-Briand. Then at some point 100 years from now, we’ll be carved up and humiliated like China and the Ottomans.

As much as I am sure that this technology will undo us, I believe allowing the Chinese to dominate it will undo us faster.

Of course. Not to worry. The only guardrails we need is a smart President according to Trump. AI is another issue that people are worried about, but Trump dismisses those concerns by basically saying don’t worry about it because he’s smart and knows all about AI, so it’s good. The morning of November 4th is going to be really interesting here.
President Trump is waaaayyyy in the polls on the AI issue.
UMass Amherst has him down 34% among all voters, and down 61% among independents.
“A vote for your Republican candidate is a vote for me,” might not be the powerful motivator President Trump thinks it is.
That all said, there will never be another popular POTUS in our lifetime regardless of party. That’s just where we are now. Guaranteed at least 40% of the country will hate their guts, no matter what.
How much has Trump personally invested in AI data centers? That’s the only way any of this would make sense, because it doesn’t make sense politically.
