Iraq's government was racing Saturday to contain the fallout after local Iran-backed militias were accused of attacking and shuttering a key Saudi pipeline.
Though an umbrella group of Iran-backed militias in Iraq denied their involvement, Iraq's government confirmed the attacks had originated from its territory. The government pledged to investigate and dismissed a military commander.
The country is under mounting pressure to prevent local militias from aiding other Iran proxy groups across the region. The Iraqi government has set a Sept. 30 deadline for non-state groups to disarm, but several of the most powerful militias have said they will not comply.
Pressure to disarm the militias is especially acute as the Iran-backed Houthi rebels make an advance across Yemen’s west coast in a major setback to the Saudi-backed coalition that risks escalating the war in the region. The Houthis on Friday seized an island in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key shipping lane through which about 12 per cent of global trade passes.
Their virtual control of the strait could send global oil prices — already inflated by the six-month Iran-U.S. war — spiralling. The strait has become a vital commercial lane for Saudi oil ever since the Iran war disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Make Iraq pay reparations to Saudi Arabia for failing to control Iranian gangs inside Iraq, after their previous strikes from Iraq. - 5 million barrels per day worth.
Incentivize behavior.
The Saudis could demand that, and Iraq will say no f’n way.
Then what?
Unfortunately, Iran is successfully getting massive support from everyone in the region now… from Russia, China, Iraq, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthies, you name it…
They are largely in control of the oil-flow, and BOTH straits are now basically blockaded.
We have to prepare ourselves for massive price hikes at the gas stations in coming weeks.
If the Iran-Russia-North Korea-China Alliance wins, the West has lost. And the consequences for us will be complicated.
By the way, Saudi Arabia has started massive attacks against Yemen… the war is starting.
Take out Kharg Island and all of their refinery capacity and Iran is finished. You can’t fight a war without fuel - nor if you can’t ship or sell oil.
The pro-Iranian Iraqi militias are no friends to or of the Iraqi government. They (the militias) want to replace them (the gov’t). In the ME, that is usually done with “extreme prejudice”.
Those in the gov’t know this, of course. The question is whether they have the means to crush the militias. So far, the answer has not been encouraging.
